sorry about that, i was in a hurry, when i get home i will post the pictures of the rest of them.
a friend found a exploding cannon ball some years ago, its now in the museum, then another guy found the one in the first picture, he swares its a shot put. now i found out why, its because the old shcool had a box of them and the kids still use them as shot puts. you can see why i put urgent, they where seen tossing them around on the beach yesterday. as kid i rpobobly threw them, 40 years ago, apparently they where in the school from the beginning, 1920's, where they came from know one seems to know.

Ok, I'm a little dizzy after reading the bentwood boxes thread, but it was interesting. Old cannonballs would be a dangerous find, glad the kids weren't tossing them.

i hope you guys are right , the kids have been tossing them and still do.

I think you can "put" your worries to rest. Here's a pic of a brand new 12 pound shot put from Ebay. Notice the circle is exactly the same.
Or for you metric enthusiasts, here's another one at 4 Kg.

DAVE I HOPE YOU ARE RIGHT, i have gont through 90 shot puts on ebay and have not seen the screw cap. you do realise now that i told the school they have possible bombs, and they still do as you and say , shot puts, they will try open one. bronman fuses where not in use when mr shrapnel started to make them, at first they would use a stick. i hope you are right if you are certain you are right post the link to the ebay one . i am a volenteer fireman, if we get a call ill let you know.

I ususally don't post links to Ebay pages because of the transient nature of the auctions. In a few days no one will be able to view the auctions, whereas if I post the pics themselves, they stay visible for as long as the post exists. Lets see if this works.

Did you just call fast dave a liar?

http://www.shapeupshop.com/athletic_equipment/track/shots.html

Look at the last few balls...

What will it take for you to believe it's just a shot-put ball? The balls that are machined have a caped hole - like the one you think is a bomb. The line or holes are used fo rthe tools that tighted the cap into the hole.

Will someone please blow this topic up?

I thought I found a crate of cannonballs that were about to explode while metal detecting yesterday.

But it turned out that it was just a pull tab.

1933 Double Eagle to the thread searching champion who posts a link to the time Hmmmm said he swallowed a pull tab that eventually grew out of his vas deferens or whatever. I NEED to be able to enjoy that one again.
