Rock or meteorite?
I picked this up years ago at a house sale. There was a collection of rocks from a geologist who had passed on. I have never been able to determine what kind of a rock it is. I tried it in the "what is it Forum" but we couldn't nail it.
It's very heavy for it's size. Weighs just over 3 lb. Measures approx. 3" tall by 4" wide. It is a dark maroon color & the top is very smooth. I get no reading with my detector.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi AntNy,

Just looking at the pictures, but not a rock expert...... they seem to look like something from a volcano, they seem to look like they are melted smooth.

Just a guess...

God bless
Peter

Looks like you have a chunk of hematite or goerthite(an iron ore). Does it create a streak on a ceramic plate, and if so, what color?
Nice looking specimen. Keep your eyes to the ground as you never know what you might find there.

Well, hematite is gun-metal gray. Your looks more brownish in color NEARLY throughout.

It looks more like a BAD piece of FIRE AGATE that has dried out (kinda like opal will do).
