Your hammered coin looks very similar to the coins minted in Sweden between the year 995-1364, very nice finds by the way. :thumbsup:

Congrats on the silver!! :icon_thumright: Well done! :thumbsup:

nice hammered, any more info on it?

Wow - British - Anglo-Saxon Penny - 'Aethelred the unready' I think, need to look it up :headbang: Paid to the Vikings to go home without fighting :o (its an Anglo-Saxon Penny at the very least)

Looked in the book, my hunch was right is a;

Aethelred II
978-1016
Second Hand Type

If you want a full ID (read PM)

Yes it is Cru...second hand type, super find :notworthy: Æthelred II, the Unready (978-1016), Penny Second Hand type...WOW Danegeld :o :o :o This is a Banner Find, the History behind these coins :o :notworthy:

SS

:o :o :o

Everybody needs to vote Banner on this find. Viking Bribe money paid by Aethelred II, the Unready, or Danegeld The Danegeld ( /ˈdeɪn.ɡɛld/;[1] "Danish tax", literally "Dane's gold") was a tax raised to pay tribute to the Viking raiders to save a land from being ravaged. It was characteristic of royal policy in both England and Francia during the ninth through eleventh centuries, collected both as tributary, to buy off the attackers, and as stipendiary, to pay the defensive forces.

Great find on the Aethelred Penny :icon_thumleft:, considering the context of the coin, where it was found and the fact that it is Aethelred, this is most likely Danegeld, as SS says. A definite Banner vote from me :thumbsup:
The end of Aethelred's reign came after the Battle of Assandun, against Knutr (Canute) in October of 1016. As luck would have it, I have secured permission to detect the farmland where the battle took place. I'm just waiting for the rape stubble to be ploughed up.
You need to hit that area hard Aquila, see if you can find some more :laughing7:

Glad you said it, lots of 1916D Mercs have made the banner, time for something different from a dark period in history.
