Hello new here:
I went rockhunting and found the usual garnets and corundum chips and traced it back to the bedrock they were eroding from. In the bedrock was white milky quartz. I used my gold bug metal detector and scored some pings. I then chipped away with my chisel and hammer at the quartz and shattered it. Inside I found small BB sized flakes that were entrapped in the quartz and were freed when I shattered the quartz. I seperated about a hundred of the flakes and went over them with the metal detector and again it pinged out.The flakes are very thin and bendable and do not return to the original shape untill bent back again. The flakes look silvery white not gold at all.Could this be a gold+platinum alloy?

Thanks Nana!!

Don't know what a camera would see. I did send some samples off to the Univerisity of Georgia today. The flakes are very shiny but silver. I can't wait to hear from the university and was wondering if anyone here would know???

Could be white gold :o

I'm excited to see what the University says ;D

Please let us all know what the results are. ;D Burdie

Hey panman,

Some of my friends in NC have found small pieces of platinum panning in NC.
As you know NC and Georgia ar in the same Gold Belt, so it is possibly platinum.

I have only found gold and garnets and possibly a small diamond panning in NC and SC. Haven't been to GA. yet.

Do you know if garnets were associated with them when they were panning??

Hey panman,

Well the garnets are a heavy stone and seem to allways be mixed in with the black sands when i am going through my cons.
Platinum is heavier than gold. So all should be in the bottom of the pan.
Please be careful breaking quartz with gold running through it. They are extremely popular with collectors as "specimen " pieces. I other words a one ounce quartz specimen rock with gold running through it may fetch a healthy price( much more than the gold value !)

Wow!!! Didn't know that!! I have many such pieces left with the whatever it is still inside the quartz!! How much more??

Update:

The University Of Georgia said this Tuesday they would let me know some results if the machine gets repaired. I did another test on the flat silvery plates. They are metal as I was able to light up a light bulb through the flakes during a continuity test.I don't think they are Nickle because a magnet doesn't pick them up.

white gold is a mix of silver and gold as far as I know it doesnt occur in nature

According to my studies it naturally alloys with the following metals in nature.

Silver called (electrum, sylvanite, tellurtide).
Palladium called (porpizite).VERY EXPENSIVE.
Rhodium called (rhodite). VERY EXPENSIVE.
Copper called ( Orichalcum).

I AM SURE THERE ARE OTHERS!!

OOPS! I forgot Platinum, Ruthenium, Iridium and Osmium.
