Weekend Finds: 1855 "III" Cent and VI Corps Badge and Walking Liberty!

Hey Y'all, well I ended the weekend on a good note but I started it off very slow while Jeff was on a streak and diggin me under the table :laughing9:... Some of you guys might know, the symbol for the VI Corps during the Civil War was a cross. This particular Corps was made up of elements of the 4th and 5th Corps and formally created here where I live on the Virginia Peninsula immediately preceding the Seven Days' Campaign. Many of the sites that I hunt are where elements of the VI Corps camped and this weekend Jeff and I were digging one of these said campsites which has colonial finds layered in as well. After about an hour, I dug the remains of an object that was SUPER Deep ( about 12 inches down). I noticed it had 90 degree angles all the way around and when I brushed all the dirt off, I was looking at the remains of a field made Union VI Corps badge! I was VERY Happy about this find! and by the end of the day ended up getting a 1848 Braided Hair, a couple Eagle "A"s, and a Walker still in the dirt, which was a relief because I had been on a cold streak for the past 2 days prior :P :P

Yesterday, We hit some NEW DIRT ;D :headbang: and at first we started out digging flat buttons but then the good stuff came. Jeff hollered out ONE REALE and about 20-30 minutes after that I dug a jumpy signal hitting in the 40s, dug down about 8 inches and out popped this little silver disc. I knew it could only be a couple things but when I looked close, my suspicions were verified: III CENTER! BOTH the Reale and the III Cent silvers had BLACK over 85% of the surfaces. I haven't encountered silver coins like these in YEARS where the Black was so deep and stubborn. So, I resorted to the last method that I knew would work which was a very small bath in my electrolysis setup. We gave the coins both a few seconds and the black disintegrated right off... It was this or leave them Black, so it wasn't a hard decision which to do.
Thanks you guys for your comments and for looking. :icon_thumleft:  Hope y'all like the pictures, the Walker I dug is still in the dirt clump, looks good to display this way. How many of you guys think I should leave it in and how many of y'all think I should pop it out to see if its a key date?

Great finds, Sentinal!

If it were me, I'd leave the walker attached to the dirt clod. It just looks so cool that way. The odds are against a key date, and you can always break it loose if you decide you might need some quick cash. In the meantime, you've got a great display and the feeling that it could be a key date to boot.

Re: Weekend Finds: 1855 "III" Cent and VI Corps Badge and Walking Liberty!

I'd say leave it, looks neat like that. Besides as the dirt dries out more it may fall off on its own.

Nice bunch of finds.

Re: Weekend Finds: 1855 "III" Cent and VI Corps Badge and Walking Liberty!

Congratulations on your finds Josh. The 3-Center turned out pretty, and were it me, I'd leave that Walker in the clump. The way it stands with the clump just sets it just right for a shelf display.

Nothing wrong with that 3 center my friend. Only 139,000 minted. Nice finds Josh. :icon_thumright:

Is that corps badge made of pewter?

Great finds as usual Josh! You guys turn up such a broad spectrum of American History every time you go out. I was looking forward to talking to you at DIV this fall, but I guess that will have to wait until spring. I would be questioning whether that is really a corps badge, or just some type of cross shaped object though. From what I understand, corps badges were not in use during the 1862 Pennisula Campaign, and were not instituted until Joseph Hooker took over the Army of the Potomac in 1863.

I believe it to be a field made corp badge. The provenance combined with the fact that the unit was formed here, many of the units of the Sixth Corps returned to this area in 64 and 65 and also for the Siege of Suffolk, and the fact that many of those soldiers were stationed here after the war leads me to believe that it is a homemade corps badge, whether lost in '62 or later. Of course its open to speculation but this is my opinion as I've seen many homemade ones that look just like this one. Remember also, the Sixth Corp returned to Hampton Roads after 1862.
Yes, I've decided to wait until the Spring hunt I do believe. I will see you then, good luck to you though  :icon_thumleft:

Yeah, if anything its a field made corp badge. Remember, the Sixth Corp returned to Hampton Roads after 1862 :icon_thumleft:

Well that makes sense then

Thanks my friend!  At first I thought it was an 1854 which is the more common date but was pleasantly surprised to see it was an 1855 after cleaning it. :laughing9: :icon_thumleft:
