weird copper and iron thing?? help please..

i found this 2 and a half inch iron nail that has a copper thing attached to it..
any ideas?

I think I have seen something like it before.I think it is something electrial. That why it has metal on the end to be pulled down to make contact, such as a telegraph.
I will keep thinking on this one.
