Possibly counterfeit? Almost looks like someone was trying to pass it off as a gold coin of similar size back in that day. Very strange.
I was lucky enough to find one and it looks like this>

Looks a lot like that. I really thought I had found some pirate gold. Lol. I have a new detector and am excited to go where I can this spring.

Did you notice how much that one sold for? If yours is of that nature, you did find some "pirate gold."
