Well I found out it really is about putting the right coil to soil! I recently upgraded my detector from an ace250 to a Minelab Xterra and went back to the french fort I have hit 100 times before. It made all the difference.. about 10 feet in i hit a strong 36-38 it was bouncing though so it felt a little odd...strong but choppy. So i pulled my plug and found 2 coppers sandwiched together with corrosion. They looked to be completely blank.. so in the pouch they went. Once they hit the peroxide and separated I was astonished to see one was blank and one had a date! 1775 was staring back at me from one edge.. and the other side showed a feint outline of George III !
An hour later I dug yet another large cent and smashed the front with the shovel..only to see the date 1858 or 1859! Canada's first penny.. oh well i thought and kept swinging.
Then I hit a very strange find for the site... a Chinese coin... after 4 hours of looking at Chinese coins and googling madly staring at 4000 coins that all look the same and near losing my mind, I found a match a 1739-1790s cash coin. Not as exciting as the half pennies but 3 1700s coins in one day blew my mind after never finding one for years.
Thank you for reading! HH!
