"Welshmans Pic-Nic of Graditude" Sandhurst 1890 [ big silver]
G.A Pickles came to Sandhurst in 1861 after spending 10 years building horse carrages at a place called Creswick. With the wealth he had all ready aquired from rich gold miners, he built a huge factory that made carrages for all needs and wants. Many of the Carrages were exported to other british colonies. Most of the work force was made up of poor people from Wales, who had little luck on the gold diggings. His workers showed great skill and were loyal. In graditude of this G.A Pickles would hold a pic-nic for the families of his employees. All were made to feel grand for one day of the year. All would ride in the companies fine carrages to a location, where they would wine and dine the day away. This event went on every year for 23 years. No expence was spared.Gee don,t we wish we had a boss like this. lol
The other day i went to site that was commonly used for this event and did a bit of hunting. With 3 inches of rain in 2 days much of the top soil was washed away and i did find a few surface relics and shards of pottery.Only found one coin tho English half crown 1888.It took me a couple of days going threw old news paper to some pics for this post.
None of the papers are printed anymore and i have aquired quite a pile over the years. Some date from 1860.Hunting for finds is one thing but putting a thread together like this takes a lot of hours. The whole story brings everything in past back to life. Thanks for looking and HH
