I need to interject here. I think it is a shame that this posting turned into an argument. I do not know Florida salvage law (other than what I know about the 1715 fleet which is still being salvaged by subcontractors to the lease owners as well as Atocha site which I also believe is still being investigated). I do not believe there is anything wrong with running side scanning sonar as well as a proton magnetometer and recording hits. If you dive and see something above the sand, not disturbing it, I do not think there is anything wrong with that either (you can dive and view a cannon/cannons from the 1715 wrecks, but no detectors allowed). Before doing so, I may check with the lease owners or FL but it’s on the web if you look. I also know there is a process of ‘arresting’ a wreck in court (I have seen this done at various locations along the mid-Atlantic coast) but again, that comes to FL and consulting with a maritime attorney.

These sites and salvers are exempt / grandfathered in.

I found the thread on my own, it popped up on my unread posts. We have rules against insulting members, we are a family friendly forum so we also have rules on language too, as well as rules against advocating breaking of state and federal laws on Treasure hunting.

No one said you cant run sonar, you were talking about blowing holes, that requires permits.

Yes I understand. That’s seabed disturbance. The wreck I referred to was above the sand and and this wreck was arrested in New Jersey. Outside of the 3 mile limit. It is all public information. It was a merchant vessel. Not a military vessel. I don’t remember the original post stating anything about blowing holes in the sand. Simply that he had a mailbox.

I missed the part indicating that he had blown holes etc. I was concluding the Christmas morning and should have read more carefully.

Personally, I’m going to continue beach and water hunting where it is of course legal as I’ve always done. Hopefully I’ll keep posting interesting finds. The forum is good.

While I can understand the urge to delete the whole thread, I believe that preserving the record of what has been said is important. In my experience people do not fundamentally change, but they CAN hide their nature if posts like these are deleted.
This gentleman had posted a very similar thread on the diving/marine/underwater sub-thread last Feb or March.
The crew of Showdown reported seeing his vessel one day on the Cabin site early in the season.
It takes all kinds and the treasure bidness sure does have em all.

Once again, things aren't always as they seem. I was "this guy's" partner this past season on the 1715 fleet. As ropefish said, we were on the cabin wreck exclusively. DM (Defiance Marine) is one of the nicest guys I've ever worked with. He's positive, respectful, and very competent in his work. He's traveled the world in his commercial diving ventures, and has a great mind for treasure hunting. But he doesn't take sh!t off anyone. We butted heads sometimes, because we're both very opinionated. But overall, it was a great experience working together. And I'm pretty picky. I would trust him with my life as a dive partner, and as one who keeps things confidential. He handled the new leadership at 1715 much more patiently than I would have. That's says a lot for his character. Regarding this thread, once two people get triggered on a forum, it never goes well. The posts should have stopped at that point, rather than continue to poke each other, and escalate the situation. Both parties were right...and wrong. Here's to a new year, and bringing more treasure up...and possibly new friendships.

New members are given a little more leeway than long standing members, because new members may not be aware of our rules.
