What animal's bone is this?

I found this bone today, i am not too sure what part of the body it might of been, i found it in England, Hunstanton on the beach sand. As seen in the pictures it is only 4-5 cm wide. As it was on the beach i think it might be a fish or a bird but please tell me what you think it could be.Another question- why is it black?

:hello: Welcome to TNET!

What you have there is a vertebra, and the dark coloration is caused by being subjected to moisture while being covered with soil.

Hey Juna!! I agree with old digger, certainly a vertebrae, from the size probably a Lumbar Vertebrae!! GOOD LUCK and GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

Is there a way of telling what kind of animal's vertebrae this is?

Do a Google search for 'seal vertebrae' and, if that doesn't help, take it to your closest natural history museum where they can compare your vertebra with their collection.
