I recently bought a Sand Shark and have 3 gold rings in the first month - recommend for simplicity and ease of use. :icon_pirat:

:laughing9: Hi Mike, your the man who can answer this question! :laughing9:
Rob, I'm not sure if you are asking about shallow or deep water hunting...
My Etrac and Safari are both outstanding in shallow beach and mud saltwater.
I am impressed at the small deep pieces they find in these conditions.
HH to ya!

I know you said except the Excal but I've had a love/hate relationship with mine. I'm a white's guy at heart so when I tried the Excal I just hated it. Now that I'm more comfortable with it I'm starting to really love this machine. With that being said...

I've also used a Fisher 1280X which I would not recommend for saltwater but is very good in fresh water machine. I've used the Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II which I liked but did not use it long enough to give any detailed feedback.

I know someone who swears by the White's Beach Hunter ID and their finds are a testiment to the machine. A dealer told me to keep an eye on the new Garrett AT Pro but since I'm not currently in the market for a water or land machine I have not really checked it out.

When I have some money to burn it will either be the White's V3i (maybe VX3) or the Minelab E-Trac.

Good Luck

My first water machine was the Fisher 1280X which I did not like in salt water so I traded it for a Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II. I only had the Garrett out a few times when an opportunity came up to buy a nice used Excalibur 1000. So I sold the Garrett and used the funds to buy the Excal. Since my time with the Garrett was rather short I can't really say if it is a great machine or not.

Good luck with your decision.

I have the sea hunter II and use it mostly in fresh water, it goes deep, pulse induction. I like the ability to tune out pull tabs, but... And I'm speaking from experience not necessarily fact, you will find a particular area where the targets are all running the same approximate depth. Tuning out trash in that area helps, but if there is a good target deeper you will loose it. This is where I think the VLF machines are better, variable tones, and better disc. PI machines are limited in discrimination, and no tone separation.
I have only tried to hunt in the Atlantic ocean when it comes to salt water. It's tough, waves move you around to much at waist deep and lift you up at chest deep, about the best I could manage was knee deep. The gulf coast may be easier. If you were diving then sea hunter goes 200 ft deep so probably a winner there. But shore hunting...good luck, I just stay in lakes rivers and streams. My advice be there at low tide, hunt on dry land with a VLF.

Tesoro Sand Shark. 177 rings, from Jan 1 to today.

I am also generally a White's guy, but the Excalibur is great!

thanks guys
