What are your most unexpected or out-of-place finds?

I think my most unexpected find was a 1856 Seated Quarter found in a 1920s yard in CA. It rang a wierd 17-18 on my Equinox 800. Thought it was aluminum when I uncovered it.

I have heard of someone on the east coast finding a surface colonial copper in a 1950s yard. Insane.

What are your most unexpected or out of place finds?

About 1980 I was out hunting coyotes in the So. Ca. desert. Parked my truck and
walked out about 200 yds into the desert, and sat down just over the edge of the
top of a wash.

Looked to my left, and there on top of the sand was a pristine looking 1919 wheatie,
like someone had just put it there.

I found a pair of knickers/panties with a used 'rubber johnny' wrapped inside them in a small cave dating from the Jurassic period,, I wonder how the academic world can explain that !!!

I was not in a cemetery nor in the Vicksburg National park. I was in the general area. We was hunting cannon shells. I got a real strong signal and started to dig it up. I was down about 3 foot and something 8 to 10 inches round and white was there. Robert the fellow that invited me down to Mississippi said what is that. I told him it looks like a skull. I took my spade and tapped it. The spade went right through. It was a skull. Not everyone was buried in a cemetery. Robert said fill it back in which I did. Found out a year or so later Robert told me there was a very large cannon ball next to it. Told me the reason to fill it in was he wanted the object. He also told me the object was so large he could not move it. Said he left it there .

Difficult to say, I've found a lot of unusual things. Here's an example:

A lock with a key still in it while hunting in the water. I think it is / was a romantic gesture-- something about tossing a lock into the water to as good luck for a long lasting relationship.

After posting it here a couple of years ago I learned it was a replica of a railroad police badge, but I found it thousands of feet up a mountain in the middle of nowhere. The hilarious part was just seconds before I spotted it my dad had commented we were walking where no one has walked for thousands of years, if ever. I said I don’t know about that.

After church years ago down in Tampa Florida maybe around 1978, I walked out to the parking lot and found a perfect arrowhead laying amongst a truck load of oyster shells that had been recently dumped to improve the parking lot. Still have it.

That's cool. I've found a lot of sharks teeth & a few points that way in fill dirt here in Florida. Sadly now most fill is screened for objects that are bigger than a pebble. The compaction requirements changed so the fill now has less "objects" in it.

I have hiked mountain and valley looking for interesting geology for the last few months. I found a few surprises, but one day, with the wife and kids, decided to go to a local preservation on the same island I live on. Heck, I can look across the bay and see the trailhead. Hiked the easy, modest 3/4 of a mile to the shoreline and found Rose Quartz in some inclusions. It was enough to facet into some gemstones.
