My uncle found this yesterday at a cavalry camp along with a couple of 3 ringers. He's thinking maybe a part of a saddle. It has a clear shape of a sheild in the middle. I'm guessing that the sheild it meant to me flush with something while the tab in inserted into it, but still no idea. It's about 2.5 inches. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2.5 inches? That's MUCH large than it appears. It looks tiny in the pics...

Can you re-post with a common, similar sized object or coin next to the item?

Also, the 'tab' also appears to have a hole in it. Correct?

I think yours is a small drum string tension retainer as shown in previous pics. Mine is from a drum or banjo.
