A hobo stove is a #10 can, just like the cans of V-8 juice. You need to cut a door that will lift leaving the cans bottom intact as your stove. You simply roll up some newspaper and insert it in the door opening and begin cooking. It is best for making eggs, done in seconds.

Simple tips can save your life!

Jeff, yours is fine, but a little high tech Mine is made when you're really in a pinch and don't have much to work with. I learned so many invaluable survival tips during my one week in the field course. Not only were we taught, we had to do with minimal supplies for a week. It was a good life lesson and you never know when you may need it in case of an emergency. I know that I can get by very comfortably for a while if need-be; especially when you know what has to be done and in what order to do it.

Made one out of an old asparagas cooker. Works great with hardwood chips or any small chunks of wood you can find. Will boil a pot of water in 5-6 minutes. Works best if large feeder hole is facing the wind. Trying to find out if I can use it in forest areas that don't let you have open wood fires.

Hobo stoves are GREAT - especially for backpackers who want to limit the weight of their pack. For fuel almost anything which will burn will do, even old rags, dry grass etc. Knowing how to make one would be a good thing for anyone in a survival situation too - and it is remarkably easy to make.

If you are working at home in your workshop with all your power tools etc you can make a really "professional" looking stove; if you are out in ye tall tules then making the holes is still easy; just use a big nail and a hammer which can be a rock to punch holes. To make a wire grill that sits up off the bottom, just thread wires through a set of holes in a criss-cross pattern.

All great ideas amigos, that paint can sure does look neat and I never thought of using a deisel oil filter; the kero heater idea is also great - if your kero stove is sturdy enough you can put a fair sized pot of water on top and leave it. It will be "instant" hot water for tea or cocoa, helps to 'radiate' the heat and puts out steam that helps with dry air.

About the only thing I would recommend to anyone making a hobo stove is don't use any kind of aluminum can; the fire gets hot enough that it can melt or burn the aluminum.

When I was in Alaska we carried one in our vehicles along with one of those big candles (4 in. dia - 6-8 in. tall). Turned with the open side up you can stand the candle in it and light it if you break down in the middle of nowhere in winter . You won't sweat but it takes the chill out of the air inside the car/truck .

Paratrooper - is that one of those with four or five wicks? I remember seeing some short, fat candles with 4 or 5 wicks, supposedly you could cook on them and it would last for hours. Candles are always a great idea to have in your pack, cabin or vehicle - you can even start a fire with them.

The hobo stove is a simple device that uses updraught to burn the fuel constructed with a multitool or just a knife not too complex you cut some holes to support combustion and the rest is up to you. Some stoves use steel rods to support a smaller can that serves as a pot when broke down the smaller can is stored in the slightly larger can.
Wood gas stove can be same principal but most woodgas stoves use fans. I have build wood gas stoves that use the small fans called personal fans from wal mart usually sold for $4 use 2 AA batteries and they greatly enhance the combustion process. I highly recommend using a fan to accomplish a better controlled burn. First it cost much less than going out and buying a woodgas stove that start around $60 plus shipping and handling I have built a stove that is not so great on size for portability but worked so good I burned the inner chamber out of it because I just enjoyed going outside and burning wood in it.
The original intent for the hot head stove was to use it in an emergency situation not for a plain pot but using a Pressure Cooker because they are so efficient at cooking food. You keep your fire going for 30min and you have a meal that taste like you cooked it for hours.
Want the best roast you could ever wish for under an hour pressure cooker.
Then there are the alcohol stoves these are made in many cost and configurations they can be very dangerous to use too.
I like the jet boil if you mostly cook things that require hot water this is the way to go.
The perfect boiled egg is set egg in cold water get water to a boil let set for 17 min and you have the perfect boiled egg the jet boil will get water boiling in 2 min your cook time is ~20 min but you use fuel for only 2 min very economical and you can use the hot water for other meals after you cook your egg in it.

Girl Scouts taught us how to make a hobo stove, outta those old large coffee cans, when I was 7 or 8 yrs old. While they had us camping on the riverbank of the Kinchafoonee Creek.

That training came in handy, when they got us lost in Chehaw Park, 700 acres of pristine conservation area!
