In my opinion, any cultural artifacts that have been looted, stolen or acquired by a means that is in any way illegal should be ethically returned to their rightful owners.

As a metal detectorist, we make eyeball finds such as arrow heads, hide scrapers and other Indigenous cultural finds in the fields. I don't believe these types of finds need to be 'returned', but if you choose to 'donate' your find back that's very different.

Dave

What if I'm small part Indian, and mixed? Then what do I do? Which part of me gets to keep it? And which part of me should I donate it to?:laughing7: And no...Those aren't real questions...I'm just joking with you.

I think anything found legally people should do with what they want..It's theirs. I don't think anyone should feel shamed into giving something up because of the past. We(my family) have artifacts that have been passed down through the generations. I'm not picking on you but going by that logic I'd have to weigh out how much Indian is in me and do what's "right" depending on blood? So I'm more "white man" at this point and should donate it? See what I'm getting at...I don't think there is anything unethical about keeping anything found. As long as it was found or obtained legally. I do get the don't take things from state or federal land especially a rare find. Don't go digging or collecting at the serpent mounds stuff like that....

The first thought I had .....was an incense burner that I use to see in "head shops" when I was in my late teens. :laughing7: But I know nothing about this kind of stuff. If I found one I wouldn't know the first thing in figuring it out. Th only thing I know well? Is an arrowhead when it's laying in a plowed field. :laughing7:

Most of the Indians of that area were killed in the war of 1812. Many were in Canada and killed in a swamp retreating with the British. Tecumseh, recruited from many tribes that made it to his area. The figure should be studied to determine where its origins were and who may have placed it there and when. Is it contemporary Mexican as in the Crystal Skulls? The recommendation applies to unusual artifacts and get recorded as your find. This is not an arrowhead, but an item that could show at a minimum trade.

This is more about our ethics, as many rites were lost in the disposal of the American Natives. Can we be honorable and still be treasure hunters?

Sorry for the delay..had to go dig these pics out from an old
post.

I see mine are slightly different, but pretty sure these were
made en masse for the tourist trade.

This piece looks like something from an episode of Night Gallery. Don't bring it indoors. Seriously, interesting looking piece. Here's hoping you can get a positive ID on it soon.
