What is the most common Half Dollar mark you find?

Well, I have been doing ths heavily since mid January and it's like clock work with some of the Half Dollar boxes you find. When I see certain Half Dollar marks on the coins in varous boxes I can usually tell that it;s going to be a skunk. What is the most common mark that you see when you open your boxes up.

The first three months it was the red ear on JKF, but now the most common and dreaded mark is the purple tail on the back of the coin.
When I see the purple tail, the box is usally a smelly one.

List the most common mark in your area and also the area you live. I am from the Upper Midwest.

the most annoying one is like 2-4 sharpie lines down the edge of the coins, I posted a picture a while back, its usually black sharpie sometimes red.

However, I still find silver in those boxes all the time even when they are heavily marked.

I think marking coins is a complete and utter waste of time like I have said may times prior. I suppose it does scare off some noobs like SFbay and others have pointed out, I can agree with that. However, if anyone actually thinks it helps them CRHunt they need a trip to the looney bin

the ones you mentioned i get here sometimes, plus I LUV JANET, LOOMBARDO (i really hate this guy),
and a new marking on the half dollar ROLLS that says "i already got all the silver". trying to figure out how these sometimes get into sealed brinks boxes

that is a mystery LOL, you should ask the service manager at the bank branch you get those boxes from.

Recently I saw a lot of 'RP' initials in red/orange sharpie on the obverse of the half. I still find silver though. The MOST common is a dark inked rectangle over the Y in liberty. I actually saw another poster uploading their ender rools with the same mark on other coins in that screenshot. I've had a good amount of red/orange ears, and black ears. I come across some double marked edges and sometimes a thick black marker covering a half inch of the rim. Still find silver with heavily marked boxes though so I'm not worried.

I don't understand edge marking, what if you find a superb mint state coin in the mix? You mark before you check for nonsilver keepers! And if you edge mark after checking the coins that's a decent waste of time. Although most non crh'ers would say we're all wasting our time.

I totally agree. This person who does the purple tail has marked beautiful NIFC coins as well as uncirculated 70's and 80's. I don't have a problem with crappy 1971, 1976, etc...but to do the high grade and limited coins is just stupid.

I have gotten several differant marks -- red slash (streak) - red dot in ear --black letter B -- green colored rim ringing -- foul words "stamped" into the coins 3 times same stuff ("eat * another word for cat")-- often these marked up boxes are skunks -- I think the way they get into the sealed boxes is thus --- the armored car companys dump the crw type returned rolls into a hopper counter type machine and re roll up them into "new rolls" for reissue --so all the culls get co mingled with other non searched coins -- thats why you sometimes get a skunk,. sometimes get a few and sometimes get a lot --it depends upon the searched vs unsearch % ratio mix of that lot --

I actually marked the black dot on the B in Liberty on 71's only for the first four months, but haven't done it since June since it takes so much time. I wanted to see if I would get my coins back, but I haven't seen one of them out of all the boxes I have gone through.

I went through 8 boxes of halves and 7 were skunks. The most common mark in these boxes were the red tails. I also saw alot of the dreaded purple tails as well.

Probably more then anything else is a black or red slash across kennedy's head. I've had boxes that had over 100 coins with this same mark. Is it really necessary to mark every single coin he looks at?

I see the Red slash sometimes as well. Nothing like the quantities I see with the Red or Purple tail though.

And on the faces, a marker covering the 99 or the 00 on the date.

It does amaze me how so many people get riled up when they see marked coins (myself included). If the box produced, it's ok but if not, everyone gets fuming mad. But you have to look at it this way, who knows how many CRHers have touched or looked through the ones that are unmarked. At least if they are marked, you know.

It seems as though the idea of psyching out other CRHers is working since everyone seems to hate Mr. Lombardo so much. If he was reading this forum, he's be laughing his pants off. If it was up to me, I would start marking "F#ck Lombardo" on them as payback. LOL

I do about 14 boxes a week(for 10 months) and have never seen a 'Lombardo' coin yet.

Any other marks people see in great numbers? Remember to include your area.

Here in Lower California, some local (?) coin defacer has come up with a new and rather devious marking plan. He is apparently an edge-checker, and whenever he comes across a half that has silver-looking edges and makes him date check, he marks those coins. He marks them with the capital letters "SM", usually across the obverse. Where this gets annoying, of course, is when you do a double-check yourself because the coin edge appears to be a silver. SURPRISE! Just another "SM"!! The genius of this is that if he is trying to track his own dumps or other statistical trends, he is more likely to find his own previously-marked coin by making the mark on the teaser coin than on a standard coin that wouldn't stand out in the crowd, so to speak.

This is a new one. Is this one of you guys? I am glad you couldnt mark on of the other 999 coins in the box and had to do a 2011 which I needed.
