What is the name of this bush / plant?

A few years ago, I was hiking in the Superstitions and found myself in the middle of a bunch of these bushes. (see attached) All of sudden, I started having a hard time breathing. I must admit the experience made me panic. The patch of bushes lasted about 250 yards before I could get out. I think I was having an allergic reaction. As soon as I got past the area, I started to slowly start breathing normal. Needless to say I didn't stick around to take a picture of the bush. However, I was out hiking on another trip and ran into the same bush. I didn't have any issues breathing but, this time it was only one bush. The bush had a distinct smell, and I immediately knew it was the same type of bush I ran into before. Attached is a picture of the bush.

I normally do not get allergies and have never experienced this anywhere. I am originally from Idaho and spent many hours outdoors, hiking, fishing, hunting, and trapping.

If anyone knows the name of this bush I would appreciate the help. I would like to learn more about this plant in case I run into it again.

I'm not from there, but it looks like a Ceanothus of some sort.
Buck brush.

Yep, it looks to be a Buckbrush (Ceanothus cuneatus). In bloom, it has a strong, pungent, sweet and fragrant fruity odour that can be noticeable over a wide area.

Thanks for everyone who replied. I was able to find the plant and do some research. Turns out the odor or smell is stronger when in bloom. I couldn't find anything about it causing severe allergic reactions. I must be special because of how it affected my breathing that day. I have hiked all over the desert and just about every plant I've encountered wants to cause you some kind of pain. That's the desert for you! Kill or be Killed. LOL
