What kind of foods do you think would be good for survival?

You would need enough fire power, but not necessary to have lots of weapons, just enough ammo. Ensure that food stocks can be booby trapped, and even have few tins or jars that have been deliberately poisened, but which YOU KNOW are just that. They steal your food, or drive you away, let them die.
Being prepared to kill to protect you and yours is a big No.1, without that you´re as good as dead, and can give up straightaway. If Martial Law was declared, then they would try to get peole into camps, avoid this at all times, as once there, you´ll be at the mercy of the gang cult, just like in jails.
Ensure you have a system to disperse smoke and smells from your hideaway, and also heat and light. None of these should be observable (Think thermal imaging) from outside, or they´ll find you.
In a really bad situation, I would get out of town asap, and into the forest or mountains, and dig out a tunnel with rooms to live in. The Vietcong did it, and were very succesfull at not being found.
This is the type of thing you need if you´re a family, especially a large family. Better is one or two people, four being a max. Gives you mobility, enough to make a workforce, and enough to guard or defend, keep watch, hunt, and cook.

I really do think ME and Ray have hit it spot on.

I simply will NOT kill a kid, or old woman stealing my cucumbers or tomatoes.

People in outlying areas may be resolved in the fashion of our common, everyday traffic stop.

...You are on your way to the Quick-Stop for a packet of Wrigley's gum... flashy lights and you pull over, (of course you do!), to either let the officer get by, or to see what the problem might be... (did my tailight go out?)
...and you are asked politely to step out of the vehicle by the direct officer with his hand on his hip.

Goodbye.

He's just doing his job.
V-8 powered vehicles for personal transport on secondary roads has been banned.
You were just living.

Off to the gulag for re-education.

Country boy can survive?

Ha! I say... Ha!

The opponent is using satellite imagery, spectroscopic and infrared imagery, unmanned UAV's,
remote ultrasonic sonde's, then, Apache or Cobra gunships for quick response.
Good luck with that ramcharger!

Gee! How to make friends and influence people?
I don't think Americans have the tenacity Charlie had in his tunnels.
A good day for him was a cup of rice and a few crickets.

The model just doesn't translate to the Anglos.

It didn't at Corrigador, Dunkirk, Bastogne, or Dien Bien Phu.
I'm not talking win or loss, I'm talking style of engagement, or subsistence.

Am I wrong again?

:icon_scratch:

Well I was going to post this rmptr

But thought it would anger a lot of people.

Face it. When it comes down to brass tacks, an individual cannot survive in todays world on their own off the grid. Because there is NO off the grid.

As you posted rmptr, there isn't anywhere to hide. The governement has it all covered and then some.

Food in the wild would become scarce very quickly IF everyone who wasn't falling into line with what the govt said was depending on it. Mainly because you would have a lot of wannabes that would mess it up for the rest. I can hunt a deer and shoot the thing but I have never field cleaned one and wouldn't know how to start. Then processing the meat? Haven't a clue. So then what do you do? Kill it cut off what you can cook and eat immediately and leave the rest to rot? If you tried to help someone out and give it to them who's to say they wouldn't wait till your guard was down and take away your gun and use it one you?

I don't know, I don't want to be so pessimistic but if it all goes to heck in a handbasket I don't think it today's day and time there will be too many people that can escape what is to come. I just cannot see it happening.

That´s where you´ll need things like bows, cross bows, snares, Kill cleanly and quietly, If you cant get a lung shot, don´t shoot, you´re wasting ammo, and giving your position away. A lung shot will drop him quite wuickly, and you can follow the blood trail if he moves a bit. Anything else, and you´ll be chasing for miles, and people will notice.
Gutting, Cleaning, and Curing, there´s plenty of books on that, either smoke it, or salt it.

rmptr, good link on after the kill.
I have done this a few times. It is messy.
Most folks have not. Be careful with the knife, is it your blood?
Yes there are satellites and IR and UAV's out there but they cost a bunch.
I am 1 of 200 million over 18 citizens and why would "they" hunt me?
"They" cannot even find Osamabin, or keep the borders safe.
And the "They" is us. My son, your niece, etc.
I think this thread was about Natural Disasters.
Floods, Twisters, that kind of thing.
I was a boy scout, be prepared.

As was pointed out elsewhere on the forum the way the US is "supposed" to deal with the neighbor i.e. the army is us problem is to import troops from other countries and send our troops elsewhere. Seems to me we are fighting a war on two fronts and we have troops deployed elsewhere. The military is spread pretty thin right now.

I simply suggest you put away enough food and water to make it for a month on your own. If whatever happens takes longer than that to get through it's really not going to matter because when people become desperate they will do whatever it takes to survive. I agree with TT a co-op of like minded people in a closed community stands the best chance of making it but also provides a HUGE target.

You're right GreyD, I guess it is directed towards natural disasters.

I kinda waltzed off into marshall law scenario that has been declared in some of the disasters we've had.

As you've said, the Boy Scout motto, "Be prepared" is wise.
How much do you prepare for? Where do you say enough is enough? ;D

It's most likely, as a couple fellows have stated, the best preparedness is in your mind,
and your knowledge of how you will deal with various problems encountered.

I alway´s have enough tins of stuff to get me through the first day´s, Army 1 man sniper tent in cammo, 3 gas cookers, with 6 cartridges, Mess tin set and water bottle, crossbow, long bow (Enough arrows for both, and the crossbow has a night sight on it too), sleeping bag, cammo clothes, snares, knives(1 a survival type with flint stone, compassand fishing hooks and line), a GPS and some batteries, plus a small world band radio, and a standard military compass.
Also a toothbrush plus basic sanitary goods, Army pick/shovel folding,3 pairs of socks and undies, and a few other bits like cammo cream, insect repelant, mosquito net. and for in winter two white cammo ponchos (black stripes).
I´m always prepared, and have been since I first went to the army. All this fits into a large frame cammo rucksack. You could also take a small fishing rod and reel, one that telescopes.
But thats always been in case of the reds over running us. Unfortunately, they seem to be rearming, and looking to take over the states that left them, so the threat isn´t over yet.

There is no harm in having (posting)it both ways. Some save food for the short term like a lay off and some are preparing for Armageddon. Either way the survivors still need food!

I would say, if you´re not able (Metally or physically) to live rough from the land, then always have enough supplies for yourself (And any family, plus maybe a pensioner or two you´de like to help out), for 3 to 4 weeks minimum. 6 weeks would be better, and rotate the goods regularly !! That way you´ll always have fresh, and not get food poisening.

I read the book, EDDE.

by Cormac McCarthy.

It is NOT a happy story.

It's a very good presentation, though.
All his stuff is good.

You'll get a kick out of the krugerrands!

Thanks Stoney!

Yes, I'd really prefer food-grade buckets... but I GOT all these latex paint 5's!

I always buy icechests that pop up at yardsales when they are cheap.

Never exactly made dry ice... Got a co2 cylinder though... from the paintball days before the boys switched to HPA. Then we had to get scuba tanks for 'em!

...sure gotta be cautious with that co2! It hurts! even with gloves on!

Go to the deli of your local food store and get the 5 gals that had pickles, olives, frostings, fillings ...etc.
then you know you are getting food grade containers.

Something I haven't seen mentioned...
Look into the new military MREs.
Self contained in a package . the heaters are even included.
the meals are balanced and are very good (mostly).
I have eaten a few and I like the ease of preparation as well as the taste.
We use them for trail food.
These also have a shelf life of ...YEARS.

Just thought I would mention it.

Thom

Thom, even though they are food grade do not store water in them!

Don't think I would want to store water in a 5gal bucket anyway too much surface area to compromise when it gets opened.
I think the special Blue water containers will work super. They look kind of like a jerry can only a gallon larger and are blue not red.

Food grade 5gals are great for dried goods, and they do have a rubber seal around the lid to prevent invasion by weevils or other insects.
Sometimes your local chemical company can sell you fresh unused poly 5gals with lids, or tell you where you can get some.

Thom

I agree with you about the blue water containers. I use them myself.

BBBut I got ALL these empty 5gal latex buckets! ;D

and they have a neato O ring seal for the lid!

...Well, I just don't know that they are safe for potable water, even when cleaned well.
How would you know what 'cleaned well' really is?

The latex paint is supposedly better than earlier products that we KNOW are bad,
but the 'better living through chemistry' products we've got to apply now have indescribable chemicals!

It was kinda my thought to use the 5's for an outer shell container, and put smaller containers within them.
Easy to tote a 5, and bury it.

They are quite strong. Sometimes we set motorcycles or auto engines on them.
If buried in the ground, they would probably have a very extended life.
UV's really eat 'em up, though. They get brittle. That wouldn't do, at all.

Hey buddy,
I have a husky that will eat all the buckets you have ...
"lickety split."

The most destructive animal on the face of the planet.
what she has eaten or destroyed to date is of mega proportions...

a Multitude of buckets to tear up would be a blessing.

May I suggest getting Siberian Husky pup.
then the only thing you have to worry about ...
is cleaning up the mess !

LOL
