HIO: the most important is knowledge stored in your head on survival foods. Two suggested books.

"Stalking the blue eyed scallop" "Stalking the wild asparagus" by Euell Gibbons (?)

Incidentally mi Lost LUV, try steaming the Cattail stem sections, same as asparagus delicious. Many parts of catails are edible, some even excellent.

Mushrooms are brilliant, so long as you´re not allergic to them.

Russia's answer to Spam? LOL Actually, I like Spam...but that stuff in those open tins didn't look appetizing. Icky. Canned fish, sardines or herring, might be good because they're small and easy to open and contain minerals. And the oil they come packed in is good for other uses, like frying and pouring over greens.

Wouldn't you want to raise animals that don't make noise and don't take up lots of space? I'd be thinking about rabbits. They reproduce quickly, make virtually no noise, and can be caged. (I know FelinePeachy is getting a migraine as she reads this. Sorry) They can eat all types of green plants. Instead of chickens, get a couple of geese, they make noise when strangers approach and they also lay eggs.

If my wife reads the part about the rabbits, i`ll get yet another a$$whoopin from her, the first time was when she asked for idea`s on names for the new pet rabbit, my suggestion of "dinner" did not go over very well.

It is a good idea however, they plump up rather quickly ( from barely a pound to 5 pounds in just under 3 months).

I once raised Rex rabbits.

They put on the best weight gain for amount of feed, but they are not the biggest of rabbits.

There's something about rabbit, in that it is NOT a sustaining meat, like beef. Can't remember exactly.

Something about amino acid chains and all that stuff. It is good, though. Just not for steady diet.

Like any white meat (Or fish), it doesn´t tend to keep long once dead, unless salted !!

OHIO rmptr: regarding wabbits, they lack FAT, which is critical for long term food.

Speaking of long term survival food, did you ever read of the explorations of northen Greenalnd?. Seems that our Explorers were supposed to be picked up by a ship at the start of the long winter, however, due to early ice formation, the ship was unable to reach the men.

Their supplies quicky ran out. They managed to catch a few rabbits, then the rabbits disappeared. The only thing that they could find were rabbit dropping in the tunnels which they boiled. It kept them alive until they were finally rescued, a bit thin but ------

Hmm uh, err, join me for a candle lit soup dinnerTT LUV?

OHIO RAY: speaking of white meat spoiling easily, in WW-2 many Japanese were bypassed on remote islands. Their supply lines were cut off by submarine and aircraft attacks, so they soon had no food.

It was solved rather elegantly on a few.Islands, they merely ate their prisoners first, then each other.

Because they had no refrigeration , they merely sliced off whatever meat they needed without killing the screaming victim who was held down . This was repeated for a few days until the victim finally died, but his meat was not spoiled while he was alive. hmmm Verified with war crimes reports from WW-2

UH TT?? Wanna try a bit of long mary kai kai with hand made torches? Very romantic.

Don Jose de La Mancha

p.s. while i as in the Solomons, i was invited to join a ceremonial dinner No, i wasn't the main course, just a guest. Regretfully, I had to decline claiming that because of digestive problems due to a curse by a witch, my personal Witch Doctor had forbidden me to partake of such delicacies, sigh and it looked soo appetizing.

Allo TT mi lost LUV: I would love to join you, but since we are 1500 miles apart, I am afraid that the pizza would be a bit cold, maybe even a bit mildewy. Since rmptr, mi buddy, like his pheasants well hung, he might like one. I will take a rain check though.

Peeps, as you can see, there is practically no end of edible food, a nice long Mary kai kai is very temptmg

If you have a reliable source of water (spring, well, stream, river) then you've got half the battle won, so to speak. From there, you can eat freshwater clams, crawdads, trout, bass, sunfish, carp or whatever is available. The water source will also attrack wildlife, which could be snared or trapped. Save your ammo for the bigger "game."

I've never bought anything from this guy, but his snares look like they would work well enough. http://www.buckshotscamp.com/Snare-Kits-Sales.htm
do not buy from uncle buck HE TAKES YOUR MONEY AND DOESNT DELIVER PRODUCT

I was wondering when you would explain what Long Mary Kai Kai was. <Gulp> No thanks.
Roasted are probably better LOL

This is a very very interesting thread and im enjoying reading it.
Nobody mentioned canned chicken or canned corned beef.
We have it in our pantry and in our basement because we loose power here for several days at a time.
We have cast iron cookware, camp stoves and a few 20# propane tanks, ect as well as a small generator for running very small items and I can use it to recharge my hand held ham radios.
I normally have 8 gas cans that are full and treated with Stabil to keep the gas fresh.
I have a chain saw w/oil and gas, spare chains ect as well as axes, hand saws and pry bars.
I have a shotgun and some ammo in case the world collapses we can harvest some rabbits for protein.
I have a wood fired smoker and a couple cords of hard wood that we can cook on and supply heat for warmth if need be.
I think we will be ok here for a while.
We also have canned soups for weather related power outages.

Don´t forget some batteries, and solar and hand powered generators to charge them if the fuel runs out. The solar chargers will also keep them topped up just in case. ensure that you have enough batteries ( about 4 x 200 amp truck batteries for an out door den, or 2 x 100 amp for an indoor den), to be able to run a small transistor radio, and a couple of small lights (12 volt 6 to 10 watt, max 21 watt are ideal). Just enough to read and see in your den.

Good morning:: Unfortunately a very very important point has been seemingly missed. Most are concentrating upon an ideal situation.

What happens to the typical city / urban dweller under these conditions? What happens if / and when they migrate out into the country invading your isolated retreat zone? The country used in the manner visualized here, just won't support more than a very limited no of people.

Remember, the American Indian was constantly at war with his neighbors, both for females and food producing areas. Many, many starved to death each winter. They did not live with nature, they raped and fought nature, and each other, to keep alive. That myth of an idyllic life should have been discarded long ago.

The best scenario that could be visualized, is to exist for a few days or weeks before the competition would overwhelm you.

This is when a nice warm female like my TT would keep a cave / hideout, nicely warm, plus she could cook, clean up, fetch firewood, .gather local roots and grasses, hunt and fish, and defend out little paradise, and pump out new future hands in between times, while I maintain / conserve my masculine strength and appearance.

Taken from the Native Indians customs word for word. It was a male paradise. sigh perhaps we can start it again?

Don Jose de La Mancha

p.s. I lived off of the country in the jungles between Mexico & Honduras for 6 months looking for Mayan ruins. It took most of each day just finding food, AND water. My basic, was rice, tea, brown sugar mixed with chocolate and a small packet of spices. When I occasionally met with a Lacandon family, I would trade off .22 cartridges for tortillas, or whatever..

Hmmmm :icon_scratch: And I said you were a good guy, well I retract that statement here and now. :tongue3:
But I always supply the best steak sauce LOL

Ah, you see, I think ahead, the others would just eat you, and then complain. LOL
But seriously, I´m not into human meat, there´s normally enough from nature, and what you have in rations. We never carried more than three one day ration packs with us, and we could survive months if need be with nothing extra.
Survival is in your brain, if you don´t think survival, then you don´t survive.
