What kind of foods do you think would be good for survival?

Anyone got any idea on how long charcoal lasts? I still have bags from y2k! It seems to me that old charcoal is hard to lite and keeps going out.

Only if you´ve allowed it to absorb moisture, otherwise it should be good for yonks.
Try putting it over a radiator or in the airing cupboard, get it dry again.

http://www.wikihow.com/Live-in-Your-Car This is actually not about food but it is related to survival and is an interesting article. And a car is a good place to keep some food when you are on the move.

Here on the left coast...

I've just noticed camp trailers occupied in yards about town.
Thought I'd mention it, as cars came up, and a place I drove past an hour ago had TWO trailers pulled in!

Quite a few smaller motorhomes with an actively used bicycle next to them...

The municipality once used to crack down on it severely.
Curious what shall happen this time around.

All your eggs in one basket, (Vehicle), subjects your hoard to total loss behind ONE towtruck!

I live in an area where most everyone in the neighborhood has either a large boat or a large camper. We can not park them in our yards! They have to be stored. How do you suppose that happened? Let me guess. The guy who owns the storage place is a brother of the guy who is a city official! Lets make a new law!

Sounds like Europe. Camping outside of official campsites is forbidden as well here (No sleeping in parking places or camping on a farmers field if he´s not registered) LOL

What about homeless persons, Ray?

There are those, in Europe, right?

Do they stay at hostels?

Or are there enough camping places?

Here, even in California, with a huge tourist industry, there are not so many.
Private campgrounds are expensive!!!

Camping grounds are expensive here too (VERY), and as for homeless, they sleep in derelict buildings or shop doorways, under bridges, or in the woods etc., That is until the Police or the local deputies (Ordnungsamtner) find them, and force them to move on. Officially we have a very small (Non existent) homeless population in good old Europe. Unofficially, but fact, it runs into probably 10´s of millions, and gets more every year.
As for poverty, they reckon Officially that over 3 million families in Germany alone exist below the poverty line (More like 10 million or more then now), so they´re looking at ways to reduce the level that poverty is calculated at, to make them selves look good again.
The rich get richer, and the middle class and poor, they just get poorer.

EDDE forgot gold pans and metal detectors.

Jimb - dry out yer charcoal in the sun if you can spread it out and when dry, seal in plastic bag.

I also see homeowners associations saying you cannot have RVs in sight on your property.
I would never join one of those. I have also seen pickups with racks banned because they could be thought of as a construction vehicle.

Vote NO on all new laws. We have enough that aren't enforced and too many dumb ones.

You are right Gray! Like Will said, "When congress passes a law it's a joke. And when they pass a joke it's a law!" We don't have home owners association here. It is just a dumb law. One that makes someone in the club rich.

Any thing that is edible ever watch Man vs Wild?

HIO: Good evening: Once while my partner and I were walking down the coast of Michoacan we decided to cut over to the actual beach area for some sea food and swimming. We set up camp at the mouth of a small arroyo (wash) where we could watch the play of phosphorescence in the multiple waves, it was actually quite beautiful to watch.

At this time there were NO roads on the coast, just few trails and jungle. The roads came much later. We hadn't seen a sign of anyone for almost a week and felt quite alone in our little paradise. Between the jungle and the sea, we were well supplied with food.

One night just after dark while we were resting with a full tummy of chachalaca Mexican pheasant), rice and herbs, tea, with clams for an after diner delicacy,we saw two human figures bent over in almost a crouch running towards us, back lit by the Sea glow.

This was a strict breach of jungle manners, one is supposed to announce their presence and intentions by singing or whistling?? Here we had two men apparently bent upon rushing us in the dark. To this day I will never know why we never fired upon them, but we didn't . As they drew closer, it turned to be two Indians that were half drunk, which explained the lax of the jungle law. They were bent over since they were carrying armloads of hot tamales etc for us. It seems that they had come to the sea also to feast and upon seeing us there they decided to invites us. We hadn't seen them??

Sober they would never have approached us in that manner. They later admitted that we would have been fully justified in shooting them. The main reason that we didn't, was that we were fully conditioned and trained with complete confidence in our shooting skill that we were able to wait until the last moment.

We subsequently became great friends and only parted company after a week.of swimming, hunting, and food gathering together.

Don Jose de La Manch

Exactly how it happens here, Don Jose...
Well, almost. ;D

After we've had a nice small meal, the guy comes around with a trunk full of tamales!

Pero esta bien.
Mi cocinera esta excellente
Suya tamales esta mejor... gringo tamales tiene mas carne!

Adios!

I have been to other sites that have survival food discusions and the treasure hunters here are far more thoughtful and intelligent when it comes to survival food. I suggest that you look this thread over good and consider what has been said here. The way the economy is going survival food and storage will one day be a topic on everyones mind. Here on T.N. you can have a head start!
