What kind of foods do you think would be good for survival?

BBq, I also have corned beef hash. If need be you can eat it right from the can. One important thing also not mentioned is candles for light. Try the large wide ones. Some with 3 or 4 wicks give a lot of light and can be used to heat your can of food.

Good point, RdeT. Plus, too many urbanites who DON'T know how to live off the land will be living off your stuff if given the chance or if they arrive in gangs. And gangs they know, so guess what you're up against - thugs who have practiced their "skills"

As for the Native Americans NOT living in harmony with nature (whatever that really means) - so absolutely true and only one of a handful of people I have ever heard say so openly. People think the Indians lived a harmonious life, yet they often fought, took slaves, killed women and children, and robbed each other. There was nothing romantic about living an American Indian lifestyle.

Human beings are predators. There is no way to escape that fact. If push comes to shove, the predatory part of us will either keep us alive or it won't - we will either fight or flee to survive. I know I'm too old and decrepit to fight, so I'm going to stick close to my little house and defend it the best I can. If things get that bad, I'd just as soon be dead anyway. You guys are welcome to feast on my carcass. ;D
Maybe the bodies of first few dozen "invaders" on my property would make any others think twice about trying to jump the fence? ???

After eating all of that food that everyone has stored, don't forget the TP!

Don Jose has made a very good point, that tribal life was not so idyllic.

Here in the western arid lands, there was not much more than a few hard-scrabble bands here and there
which kept moving from place to place in search of enough to get by.
They got by mostly by starving.

I guess some of the tribes did ok, long as their numbers remained low, and they were situated well.
But then they would have been subject to forays by various raiders in surrounding lands.

I consistently recall a particular thought that referred to our cities as veritable deserts that were supported only by the constant influx of goods and commodities brought in by truck and rail. If the pipeline carrying the influx halted, it wouldn't be a week before the shelves were mostly barren.

A short time after that, raiding parties would begin to organize to forage out from the city locales.
Of course they would find little available upon barren farms that had once been reliant upon a credit system necessary to produce the mega-crops that have delivered to our food conglomerates.

I've been incorrect on a number of calls recently.
Perhaps I'm wrong on this one, too!

Corned beef hash, deviled ham, canned stew, Spam, canned chicken, sardines, canned tomales, chili. All good, but some veggies would be nice also. How about canned peas, beans, carrots, and beets?

Make sure your cans have pull tabs. Would be heck to have a stockpile of canned goods and no can opener. ROFL
Be sure to get a few GI can openers to have on hand. Practically weightless, yet priceless.

If you really want to dig in, you can get canned eggs and other things that have a shelf life of 25 years. The dried eggs run about $20. / can.

Hey monty, a good knife can still open a can...just be careful doing it. We treasure hunters have probably all seen old rusted tin cans with their tops cut open with a knife. I've even dug up a couple of beer cans with their lids peeled back that way - must have been a hard way to drink. LOL

Those P38's (I think that's their name) can be had at any surplus store or online for about 99 cents each. (I remember when they were a dime.) I've got them everywhere because although a knife works, using one to open a can could be dangerous.
One in every British Army ration pack in my day, so get some ration packs in, and you´ll have more than enough.

P-38's were in my C-Rations as well. However everyone always asked me if I had some, and I answered yes. I only have one left now. Good thing that you can get them at a hardware store. They even have large ones for sale now.

Good morning: the Gi can openers in the larger sizes, make good makeshift screwdrivers also.

As for opening cans with a rock sheesh, once on the trail to the Barranca de Cobre I was effectively abandoned by my man, the local mail man, he had agreed to carry some of my stuff while I stayed behind looking for a mule. The end result was that I couldn't find a mule in time, and since my bed roll etc was with the mailman, I decided to go after him on foot, mistake, that little wiry character could travel, he did it every day.

Before I left the ranch, I went to the little store and bought an oval can of sardines, just in case I didn't catch up to him, second mistake. Well I didn't , and as night fell, made a small camp alongside of the arroyo. I left the can of sardines for breakfast, and built three small fires to keep warm, one at my feet, the other two on each side of my shoulders. One uses very little firewood this way and can keep quite warm.

The next morning I took off after him and found that he had camped just 600 meters further up the Arroyo - sigh. About 10:00 I decided it was time to open the can of sardines, no knife, it was with my gear. So I was reduced to looking for a suitable rock. The operation took about 1/2 hr, but I had my breakfast, and smelled like sardines for a week. How to remove sardines from a can with no spoon or fork? fingers naturally. eating them was the third mistake - the sardines, not my fingers..

About 11:00 it was forcibly brought home home that the sardines were tainted urp. I had a two quart canteen with me, habit, so I forced myself to drink as much water as I could, hoping to dilute the problem. Every 100 meters there was an urp session and another liter of water drunk.

This went on for two days until I finally wobbled into my destination, Chinapas. I found a cot and room and for the next three days stayed in bed, just urping. Where was my TT Luv to hold my poor hand, and coo sympathizing words to me?

Soo, I learned several things, (a) always keep a can opener of some type with you, (b) the possibility exists that the rock from the arroyo was contaminated , or (c) the d---- sardines were spoiled. I still can't eat that brand of sardines.

Moral, always have a gi can opener with you, AND, be sure of your food, this is especially important in a survival crisis, I was lucky, I learned later that many had died from this.

p.s. Ray, the basic problem in roasted "Long Mary kai kai" is where do you get an oven that size in the jungle?
surely you wouldn't suggest dismembering first? Think of the aesthetics .

It's hard to feel sorry for you while I'm laughing so hard, but I'm trying, I really am!! :D :D

And, as sort of an aside to this, I did hear that cannibals call human meat "long meat." Is that right? Similar to your Long Mary Kai Kai?

Af My friend, yer a sadistic fiend sniff. hmm, I wonder if dowsing would be of any help on detecting spoiled food?

You are correct, "long Mary mean precisely that, "long" meaning human, Mary, of course, referrs to Women..

They told me that one cannot actually distinguish between piggies and people. I have taken their word on this so far sheesh.

Dowsing probably would help on detecting spoiled food, but you would have to have a piece of food you know is spoiled to stick on the end of your coat hanger first....

And I'm glad to hear you've passed on the long meat so far. I wonder why those chose to refer to it as "long" meat? Some kind of inside joke?

I alway´s go for the tender bits first LOL.
Alway´s carry a Leatherman or similar tool if you can. Another good one ist the combo sets you´ll get from most survival stores. A knife that splits into two. One side has the knife and can opener, the other the fork and spoon. Some also have a punch and a cork screw too.

you guys are sick.
and it's long pig that I heard.
who would go traveling without a knife?
better than shoes.

Oops!

That just won't work for me, Grey...

I'm not getting far at ALL without shoes on my feet!

It would be easier for me to fabricate some sort of knife than effective shoes.

Ha! Ha! Anyone know how to run a poll?

Knife or hiking boots?
and from there you must forage for the other...

Do you think that if you had a big enough food supply that it could be confiscated? They could do a house to house search looking for food and guns. Which is why a safe place is necessary in a survival situation.

Well according to what I have read, if they declare Martial Law, Food hording is a criminal offense. Yes I think they would do a search and if your stash was found it would be taken and so would you possibly.

Still I am keeping some extra food around. I have kids and while I can go hungry it is hard to explain that to kids.

I agree Jimb!

A hoard will be deemed illegal under some pretense.
No matter how ridiculous.
Storage of gasoline is now illegal.

Home storage of necessities could quickly become common knowledge and subject you to thieves.
A flourishing garden would draw undue attention.

I really can not conceive of ANY safe place.

For any number of years, gated, and limited access communities have been on the rise,
among those who can afford them. Fixed defense is awkward and can be a burden.

:icon_sunny:

And if everyone around you is starving and your family seems to be doing ok, red flag.

You have kids? You think they won't slip and let it out you have food? red flag.

Do you really know your neighbors? I know I don't know half of them as well as I would like to. red flag

Do you have enough firepower to keep what you have put away? red flag

Could you actually kill someone to keep food you have put away? red flag.

I think you need to be prepared for the short-term. A few weeks to a month at most. Anymore unless you live in a remote area, and you will probably lose everything you have put away for just such an event.

I also think that if Martial Law was ever declared and it became a real issue, the Gov't would round up all the people living outside of towns and population centers and make them come into a larger area where they could be more easily controlled.
So the remote area thing isn't even a gurantee. But I am no expert on this topic.
