I never had a pin pointer on my Whites 6000, and dug some larger holes at times. When I use my mxt, I have a Sunray probe mounted on it. The Sunray works off the electronics in the machine, so when checking the hole, I can turn the gain way up and get more distance/depth looking for the target. The only problem is you have to remember to turn the gain back, and remember to flip the switch when you start detecting again, and it seems like I forget to do that at least once per trip. The Sunray also works on my dfx, but is a pain to switch over, so I have a less expensive White's pin pointer that came from Kellyco when I purchased the machine, and it seems to work OK. It's got a small light that shines in the hole, and vibrates, so it works well with ear phones on. I'm hard of hearing, so I have high dollar phones that really seal outside noise, so I like the vibrate feature. The Sunray works through my ear phones, which is great. I bought the dfx because of it's dual circuits, and the ability for it to seamlessly go from wet to dry on salt water beaches, other than that, I use the mxt with the Sunray most of the time.
