It is lead, about 1" wide.

I know I have seen these things on here before.

Yes, sewn in the hem to keep them from blowing. The thread was sewn around the bar in the middle kinda like a button.

They were also used in men's coat hems. :icon_thumright: Breezie

When we find them in civil war Military sites, we call the coat-tail weights. They were definitely used in Officers' uniform coat-tails, as well as Civilian coats and skirt-hems.

They almost look identical to the ones made today. I was trying to find a way to differentiate between CW era and those made today and I think there may be mould marks on the newer ones. Some people are selling these as CW artifacts. Im not sure if this is true maybe you can verify.

The first picture below was from a CW website. The bottom pic is modern curtain weights with numbers.
