What's new

What's on your hip when out prospecting?

' What's on your hip when out prospecting? '

Well on the one side it is a big dark hairy mole that just won't quit. On the other it is the waistband of my fruit of the looms that always rides up there. The Dr says neither of these situations is going to change any time soon without serious surgery.

A rather personal question you ask.

I'm either carrying a Ruger Sr 40 (compact) or a Dan Wesson CCO 45. while metal detecting. I carry about 50% of the time depending where I'm at.

Been prospecting for 70+ years, I never carried. You will only get hit once and you won't see it or hear it coming.

That work for a brown bear relaxing with cubs around the backside of the next bush?

With the crazies already hatching a plan to reintroduce grizzly bears to Oregon, Washington, and California, I contemplating a new purchase. I see The 10.mm Auto is what slot of people are promoting, but that’s pretty much a .357 Mag. which from what I’ve read is marginal for these beasts when they are committed to eating your guts.

I’m thinking a Ruger double action in .44 Mag. W / 4” barrel. Limited reading says that’s the number 1 caliber used and it is 98% successful or close to that in stopped bear attacks. But not necessarily for general detecting. .38 Special +P snubby works for me. Something I’ll actually have and not really notice.

Here's the 44 Magnum I toted. A 1970s JP Sauer & Sohn Western Marshal, my dad bought while we were stationed at Mountain Home AFB Idaho (75-77).

Very nice Sarge. Thanks for sharing. I have a particular fascination for a single action colt style revolver as well. Not sure how prone that design is to shooting loose under Mag. loads.
I like to shoot not just carry.

I really like that single action. The idiot box says they hold up well to heavy loads. 5” barrel? A 1976 model might be on the C&R list?

This particular one, the screw for the loading gate tends to loosen up. So it gets adjusted after every outing. Thing is, if you tighten it down nice and snug the gate won't close all the way. So it can only be tightened so much. Next time I mess with it, I'm going to loctite the screw in and be done with that game. Other than that she is stout and takes the loads very well. Another picture of it with my 1972 S&W 15-3 (38 SPCL)

Good taste. I buy new stuff too, but it’s the older stuff that gets me excited. A few freckles or silver carry wear doesn’t bother me in the least. Doesn’t look like there are any freckles on those.

Well then, that would be me, as I don't run anymore. So you wouldn't have to run fast, hell you could just walk away briskly.
I'm right there beside you. The only thing that runs on me now is my nose. I ever hit a hornets nest i will briskly walk away while taking it like a man. :laughing7:

Smith & Wesson 629. I ordered this one as soon as I heard they had come out. Back in the 80s I think. It was one of the first ones made with the recessed cylinder. They dropped that feature right away. It’s a beast with full factory loads. I reload 44 magnums and tone them down to 44 Special speed. Much more pleasant to shoot.
