Re: What's the most valuable coin YOU'VE ever discovered?

Well, i found an the rarest date out of the braided hair series- 1857. The coin shared it's date with the flying eagle cent and there were only ~333,000 minted. Mine, being dug, might fetch $30. But i predict the price will rise soon.

The most valuable coin I ever found was back in March 1998. I was detecting along Penn's Creek, in Union County, Pennsylvania. I got a vert strong hit on my machine that registered quarter. I dug carefully as usual, and at 2 to 4 inches deep I unearthed a 1793 Chain Cent. It was authenticated, encapsulated, and graded Very Good 8 by ANACS. I sold it on Ebay back in 1998 for $2,750.00.

Mine would have to be the 1878-cc Morgan. I cherry picked it at an antique shop marked at $15 but was badly under graded at vf 12 by a dealer, but came in more like AU55. I screwed up though and cleaned the darn thing. First and only time for that. I had been out of collecting for 15 years and back then in the 70's it was a common practice to shine them up.

I don't know that is had any value or not but....I was going through a cookie tin of old coins that my husbands' grandfather gave him and there were literally hundreds of pennies in there. So, being the avid coin hound that I am I discovered a very shiny 1857-O half dime very minimal wear and there was some strange "coloring" around the edges. Unfortunatley it was stolen along with the tin and some very nice 2 dollar bills......oh, well!

Can't wait to read what everyone else "discovered"!

I found a 1935 Connecticut tercentenary commemorative half dollar in a bag of half dollars from a bank. It's in MS 50 and worth around $200.

Re: What's the most valuable coin YOU'VE ever discovered?

I forgot - in 1965, buffalo nickels were still in circulation. I received a 1918/17D in change. It was in About Good condition; its value at the time was $65. It's now worth $1,000 in the same condition. I sold it, sadly, to a coin dealer for book value ($65) a few weeks after finding it. I greatly regret having done so; while sixty five dollars was significant money thirty eight years ago, the coin is still worth significantly more today in terms of its real value.

Hello to all, Nice to be here. I have found two 1918 Filipinas Centavos Sorry I don't have a picture of these. And I have also found a 1875 three cent nickel. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.

Re: What's the most valuable coin YOU'VE ever discovered?

Found an old cache of IH and Early Lincoln cents and two Flying eagle cents in a small fruitjar at 10 inches just off the corner of our old bunkhouse. one of the lincolns turned out to be a 1909 S vdb in VF condition it was worth about 650 when found, is worth much more now. The bunkhouse was built in 1880 or 90. The original deed is dated 1878. The family farmhouse was built in 1906 and torn down this spring. The Bunkhouse is the first building on the place.
