I was removing this steel pipe stuck in the ground in my backyard,i had to dig down 5 feet to get it out,i was digging with my bare hands when something sharp sliced the top of my index finger wide open.this metal object is what did it.it had a light layer of rust on it which cleaned up with my wire wheel.its not stainless but maybe a better grade of steel.any ideas what it is? it looks like someone beat it out from a fire,it wasnt made with a machine.

I get tetanus shots about 3 times a year an each shot is good for 5 years so i think im covered.its pretty much routine when you go to the hospital an need stiches they give you the shot.funny though you never hear of any lockjaw case from getting tetanus.but i have my own sutures an liquid lidocaine an novacain so if i get cut an its not real bad ill just sew em up myself.alot of times ill just pour the liquid lidocaine in the wound an bandage it up if it doesnt need to be sewed.that stuff burns like hell but kills the pain for a few hours 8)i have a pretty extensive med kit that i keep on my treasure boat that can pretty much take care of any injury, even a shark bite.med O2 also.have to have it onboard.

Fisheye.... Do you think it might be the top of a lightening rod that was used on old houses ?
Might be the part of a wind direction arrow from a old weather vane.

kansas,
i thought about that already,if you look at the pics,it has barbs facing back from the pointy tip, also on the very end of it,so if it goes in something, its not gonna come out.an it has a twist so when it goes in it twists.it almost looks like the end of a arrow where it goes in the string but its squished together tight.its too short to be a arrow or a bolt for a crossbow.unless it had a stick on it.plus i would imagine its gonna do alot of damage if its pulled out.i wouldnt want to be stuck with it.if it goes in,it will have to come out the other side.or of course it can be cut out.

it is certainly some type of spear or harpoon point (hence the barbs). As to it's age or background...I have no clue. Could be anything from a spear for muskrats, to fish, etc.

Will check a few of my books and see if I can come up with anything.

Hi, Bk., try super glue for joining the edges of a cut, but its NOT for deep wounds which may require suturering underlying muscle structure. It is not applied in a contnous thread but by a seres of dots across the wound.
Press the lips of the wound shut / together then apply the dots of super glue, hold until set.

House hold instant glue works just nicely, but if you are a stickler, medical grade is available but at a considerably higher cost.

This is straight from my surgeons mouth.

Alternative, just use butterfly adhesive strips. Make them yourself, just cut "V" notches on both sides of the middle of strip of adhesive,so that there is only a thin strip joining the end pieces, this leaves only the thin strip where it crosses over the lips of the wound which minimizes any possibility of reopening the wound when changing dressings..

p.. No suturing pain involved which is a plus.

I wonder if it is a version of a tuna dart. (Like a harpoon tip that was tied off to a float)
you'd spear them and let them run with the float till they were done.

Wow!!!! That is awesome. I have never seen anything like that. If it is a tuna dart it is still awesome. 5 feet down and only lightly rusted. Some good metal for sure. That has got to be one mean weapon. Way to go and thanks for posting those pics.

Hope your hand heals soon.

??? Where would you tie off the line to the float. I'm wondering if it wasn't used for something else. The shaft would be tied on, that part makes sense, but the shaft should be able to come off easily and the line free so the fish could sound. I just don't see where you would tie the line. Maybe a nasty spearhead for land hunting or maybe spear fishing?? Well I guess I've confused things enough. HH Stan...

The shape of it indicates that if it was used as any kind of projectile it would spin while in flight. What does the shank look like? Does it look like it would be hafted into the hole of a shaft like a knife, or be attached some other way?

diggummup,

yes in lake mary,fl.as i told somewhere here earlier lake mary has been here since the early 1800's there used to be a flour mill on the next block south of me.on the block north of me there was a old casino on the lake.from what i hear it was a pretty regular hangout for mobsters.lots of hookers an fights, gang activity an gambling,i would imagine where my house is it was all woods.cause my yard has the biggest oak trees in the whole area, they must be over 100 yrs old.theres a museum down the street,it sux though, the old lady that runs it is never there,i have to call an make a apt then shes a no show most of the time an when she does show she dont stay for more then 15 min.i dont even know why this stoopid city has a museum if its never open.i guess its there for looks, the town just spent 30 grand on it putting new wood on the outside.i got some of the old 120 year old cypress panels for my hot tub sides.if i can find out about the mill, where it was egzactly located, maybe they had a blacksmith there on the grounds.i have found bullets here before, plus a tiny gold cross with diamonds in it.some day when i get some time im gonna hit the area where the casino was,it burnt down in the 20's.it sucks though, its all woods now, snakes an who knows what else lives there.but they did have some kind of a pier out over the water so maybe theres stuff in the water too.

middenmonster,

if you look at the lower pic, zoom in if you have the zoom extension for mozilla or save it to your drive an use a pic viewer proggy look at the shaft on the end,it looks as though its notched but now its squished together tight.its too short for a bow or cross bow, maybe with a short wood shaft some crazy person shot it out of a gun.also theres no stamps or markings of any kind, just hammer marks but the barbs look as though they are filed, very sharp too.the arrow blade is thin but uneven thickness, very crude.
