Why do you need a cover?

Covers protect relics!

Use Plasti-Dip, either the jar of liquid (which you would literally dip the pointer in) or mask off the upper half and use several coats of the spray version.

I'd rather not replace the probe again. Year-round use in these volcanic soils, that tend to work grit into the tiniest of cracks. Plus, I'm not always mindful of covering the speaker (holes) with my thumb, when I'm working. Thanks for showing interest.

Wrap tape around it where the speaker is.

I did see some homemade clear covers on ebay for them. If you are trying to keep from wearing the tip of the unit, good luck. I wore one down over an inch. The on off switch broke in the on position on that unit at 22 months old.
I sent it in and they completely rebuilt it. It looked like a brand new unit but now the tip is worn again.

One thought would be to replace it with a TRX which has a replaceable case and a bunch of new features.

He is trying to avoid replacing it again but I do agree, the other manufacturer's are coming up with some nice copies.

"copies" as in appearance, yes but copies as far as performance, new features, and reliability, no.

thanks! good idea, on the tape - I might try duct tape (over the cellophane tape).
My first pro-pointer, the rubber trigger boot shrunk, and was slopping-around when it finally went...!
Almost 6yrs old! they are a great tool!

WHY would they make replacing the case, a major feature?!
Could be strength is an issue...?

I saw the TRX test showed it had a hourglass-shaped sensitivity range...Has anyone done a graph of the Garrett pointer?

I think the cover would keep the super-fine volcanic dust, OUT of the speaker, the light and control button..and I guess the battery compartment, too!

Pre TRX vintage pointers such as the Gpp showed the need to be able to service the pointer case. Whites did just that with a cheap method of repairing a damaged case without sending it back to have it done. Your other question about volcanic dust could be temporarily solved with a condom which some have found to be effective. Not very substantial but could be replaced in the field without any effort.

I like the idea, but I want to be able to remove the cover when I want - especially if it goes in for warranty work! Thanks!

If you are going to use tape, use the Gorilla black tape. It is super strong. Only comes in black. Surface must be dry and warm for a good stick. But I fixed a small whole in a plastic bucket with it and it held for about four years. Amazing really. Love the stuff.

to guard against the fine, powder volcanic dust we have here...(for Summer).
And to protect the pointer from constant wet, in the Fall, Spring and Winter - the rest of the year! =)
