I have 2 rings that I want to get checked out to see if they have any value beyond scrap. Is this done at local jewelers or sent away?
What is a reasonable cost/average cost?
If its gold but there are no big diamonds/etc is it even worth doing?

Overall just wondering about the process.
Thanks.

I Take mine to a Jeweler
who gave me a card once telling me he would
like to see my Jewelry finds..

Just remember if you
Ask Value, But make it Clear
You have no intention of selling
to Him. He will probably give you an honest opinion
on value, Or try to charge you for a professional
Grading, If they are realy Impressed

IF You ask what they will Pay,
You can consider their answer 33%
of what they think it's worth,
so they can Double what they paid & still sell
at a discount.

It is good to have a jeweler you know and trust to evaluate the jewelry.

That's about the situation here also, that is they pay about 33% of list. If you ask for a professional grading, they will charge over $35 and give you an insurance grading which is on the high side.
Here's what I do I have a little pocket scale that I use for weightings nuggets. It weighs in troy ounces. That is what gold is valued in. I weigh it then multiply that by: 24kt.....100%, 18kt.....75%, 14kt.....58.36%, 12kt......50%, 10kt......41.7% These aren't exact, but close enough to get the value of the gold. If it has a sizeable gem, take it to a jeweler, but I think their 33% rule will apply here too. Frank

Frank and Jeff are right. Jewelers won't give you Dip for any stones but will offer to reset them in a ring for you. Mostly you can sell gold rings to friends for more than what the jewelers would give you. Best to weigh your gold and follow a formula to determine value.
Here is the one I use.
