Which Detector is Right 4 Me?

I need some advice from experienced detecterists who could suggest a metal detector that may be a good match for me.

I recently sold my JW Fisher 6X. It was too heavy and I don't get to dive too often. I enjoy this sport and want to purchase again in the near future.

Here is some criteria for a possible match;

1). I want a detector that will detect gold nuggets and jewelry that is easy to use and understand.

2) Cheap but not too cheap. Say... under $125.00. (Cause I don't get out too often).

3) Works well at the beach and will not be affected by salt water/sand. (Can be submersed but not often and maybe to only 15-20' deep).

4) Very light weight and adjustable to my arms length/reach.


I like to beach detect and also pan for gold in shallow streams. (Hope I posted in the right place).

Is there a match for me?

Hey Skip,

You may find something under $250 but the performance and the durability will most likely not be there. There are some units on EBAY, type in water metal detector, that Cobra puts out that are near your price but still above. If you watch EBAY enough you may catch one of these units that someone realized is not what they want.

I am very patient and I caught about 1,400.00 dollars worth of water detector and additional equipment for 725.00.

Craigs List is also a good place to watch if you are familiar with it. I found my Sovereign Elite with two coils, ear phones, a pinpointer and other stuff on there from a guy who wanted to trade it for some golf clubs. I got about 750.00 worth of equipment there for a 200.00 set of golf clubs that were taking up space in my garage.

Back to your question. Anything that you can get for 250.00 that works underwater probably won't for long and I don't believe you will be happy with what you find. If you are patient and you see any recent model Tesoro, Garrett or White's underwater detector on EBAY or elsewhere in good used condition for 350 to 400, I would jump on that. You can pay for one in a few good days of hunting. Just look on the past posts on this listing and see what is coming out of the water. In two days I found a Platinum ring, two gold rings and one silver.

Good luck but I would stay away from low end stuff that you will regret spending even 150 on.

Your options will still be limited. Bid on a used one on Ebay, my best advice.

I sold a Cobra Beach Magnet for 210.00 On ebay . it was brand new , I never used keep looking on ebay..

for that price your not even going to get a good beach machine that will hunt the wet sand. That (JW Fisher 6X) is about a 1000.00 give or take machine, use that money an buy a very good machine an be happy in the long run an not trying to buy another machine in a few months because your not happy with your 125.00 unit.

All good advice and thank you for your responces.! I will be watching Ebay and craigslist. I just saw an Aqua Pulse for sale on ebay, but I assume the reserve is probably at least $450.00 or better. It isa guy from the UK. Those units seem to be of higher quality... I guess what is being said is,,,, You get what you pay for.. Duh..


I'm thinking that the 8 - AA battery required ones are Junk What's your opinion? I just don't know enough and will have to continue looking around. Do more research on it.
The JW Fisher was my first. It's all I've known since 2005 when I got it.
Are the rechargeable units better? Right? No reoccurring cost for AA Batteries..

Skipper, your JW Fisher was a good PI unit, but had almost no discrimination to iron. When I read your post I though this question is easy and though of the Garrett Infinium LS as it runs about $1,065.00 and also can find gold nuggets besides jewelry and coins on the beaches and in the water. Then I read the #2 criteria of around $150 dollars and was stumped.

The closest you can come to that price is a land detector that you can hang from your neck while wading. It won't be good for nuggets and you can't get her wet so that leaves out the diving too.

Eight AA battery detectors are not junk, but the batts are stored inside and being a none PI, they last longer. True the Excal has a rechargable battery pack at it is a snap to recharge after around 20 hours use.

I'm afraid your budget (under $125) leaves us with only one answer; no detector will do what you want for that price. Joe

Thank you for your input Guys.

I'm increasing my budget now to a more realistic figure, however I will have to stay around $500.00 or suffer a battle with my Wife. It's just too hard to justify to her, and, I will have to match the cost of my toy in gift ,or money to her.

For now, I'm gonna wait and see what comes up. Do more reading, pick your brains, etc.. I really would like a unit that may be chest mounted on a harness. The weight on my arm, due to old injuries, may be aggravating. I saw the other posts about hip mounts and neck mounts....all good reading which helps with my decision process.
