Who Collects Black Glass?

Here's a black glass bitters bottle. This bottle is so dark that I had trouble photographing it. After many tries, here it is:

These Dyottville GW wine bottles are classic. They just strike me as what a bottle should be like. And, as a bonus, they often have good color and "character" like this one!

A really black glass.
No light shines through,no lamp,no sunlight
18 cm height, 1880-1900, content unknown

Interesting bottle, 'Erdspiegel'. What do you think it may have contained?

It's not a simple utility bottle, and the glass was intended to block light. It's seven inches tall -- contents 250 ml or so?

The bottle appears to be more than a laboratory bottle -- was it intended for some sort of light-sensitive household chemical like hydrogen peroxide?

Any other guesses?

I've got no ideas. But i will ask a friend of mine, when i will see him for the next dig after winter. He's bottle-digger for 30 years and collects, too.
You're right, the bottle contents 250ml.I have another one in a different form, with inscribtion 'Javoll'.I must search for it in my depot. :dontknow:

Here's a black glass brandy-bottle: 'Lucas Bols, Amsterdam'
found on a dump-site,where I was very active this year

Whoa! I really like the Bols bottle with the siegel !

An opaque bottle with JAVOLL embossed? I picked this off the Internet: "Javoll is actually a slang way of saying Yes - the meaning of voll is full or complete. Coming from the army days "Do you understand?" The answer "Yes, fully, Sir"; ... Javoll is actually a slang way of saying Yes". That would be pronounced something like "ya-VULL", I guess.

That sounds akin to the American practice in the mid-20th century of giving expressive names to sodas: KISS, HOWDY, FLIRT, LIKE-ME, JOY, among them.

That looks right, 'Erdspiegel'! . . . a master ink, perhaps! Does the opaque bottle have a spout or a crease in the lip?

These are British examples with creases in the lip interiors.

Hey, 'Road Dog' . . . I'd call it nice!

At eight inches, it may be a half-bottle for wine. I cannot tell from the image of the bottom whether it has a kick-up.

You've posted the same image twice. Did you have a close-up of the lip?

Thanks for the additional images!

The flattened string suggests a French origin, but could be from elsewhere on the Continent.

The half-bottles are harder to find, for some reason. Here's a half-bottle with a standard size bottle for comparison.

Thanks Harry. I don't think I've seen the smaller ones much either. It was different so I snatched it up.

Here is one I purchased at a outdoor sale for $8.00. I was told by the seller that it was found on the banks of the Panama Canal. Ive been told that the seal embossing is in spanish. Lip looks to be shaped for a pour spout. Any info on this one would be appreciated. Age, origin, value.

What a nice yard sale find!

The embossment sounds Spanish - likely from a Central or South American company. "Batalla" means "battle," but it is a common Spanish sur-name. "hijo A. Batalla" might be translated as "from [the undertaking or personage of] A. Batalla".

I imagine that the bottle dates from 1882 (French attempt a canal) to 1902 (Americans take over from the French). I don't think it would date to much later than 1902.

Im bringing back a very cool old thread with a new get for me today! It is a very crude, very nearly 11" tall, pontiled black glass wine bottle. I want to say it is late 1700s. the pictures take away some of the crudity and make it look newer in my opinion though. Harry, what do you think?

I like your bottle! Every one of these hand-finished bottles is unique. I think your cylinder wine (versus 'squat cylinder') may be British (it appears green without a yellowish-amber cast). In that case, I think the bottle may date to about 1800, +/- 10 years. Separately-applied blob-top is later; mushroomed lip with shallow angle from horizontal is earlier. Nice acquisition!
