From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No deaths of humans have been attributed to Florida red tide, but people may experience respiratory irritation (coughing, sneezing, and tearing) when the red tide organism (Karenia brevis) is present along a coast and winds blow its toxic aerosol onshore. Swimming is usually safe, but skin irritation and burning is possible in areas of high concentration of red tide.

If you have any open cuts they can become infected.

Isn't it a shame that doctors used to encourage you to go into the ocean with various skin disorders. Now they say to check on how toxic the water is first.

Some of the beaches around Key West close once in awhile due to toxin levels. Many California beaches that we use to surf and dive at now stay closed almost as much as they are often. A huge section of the Northwest Gulf is now officially a "dead zone" and it's growing in size every year. Medical debris once again is washing up on beaches all along the Atlantic Seaboard. Thousands of metric tons of toxic waste are still dumped into our oceans every year. In some areas, even beach sand is beginning to test toxic.

It's a shame that we didn't do something about it when we had the chance. I wonder how much more the balance will take.
