Who's Carrying a Glock While Detecting Va. Beach? Mention on National News.

"Not that there is anything wrong with it" lol Watching Fox Business News last night and Dagen McDowell mention that she had seen a guy carrying a Glock while he was metal detecting at Va. Beach. He told her it was to protect his gold ring finds. No time frame but seemed to indicated it had been recent. She is pro gun but was still seemed to be shocked to see it on the beach. Sure he has his reasons but I have not felt the need to yet. Has anyone else felt the need to carry at the beach?

Folks,

Just a general observation based on the comments in this thread.

I find it somewhat sad that things have deteriorated to the point that people feel the need to be armed going out in public for self protection.

I'm sure that wasn't the case going back 50 years or so ago.

That is something I wouldn't want to even try with my .45...

Just like so many others, you are confusing preparation with fear. I'm sure there are some who obtain CCW permits and carry out of fear, but the vast majority carry for the same reason there is a spare tire on your car. We don't go around expecting to be victims of crime, we just go about our daily lives. The only difference is that IF a bad guy decides to do something, we are not helpless victims.

Please politics out of thread..

I've seen it here where I live within the past few months. I've lived here for 3 years, off and on the first year and a half. Never heard a gun shot within the neighborhood. I hear them in all directions outside of the neighborhood because these are sub divisions dropped in the middle of country. These past few months almost everyone in the neighborhood has been target practicing in the back yards with wives and kids. I'm not sure if it's sudden fear? Or just follow the leader, one guy does it and then spreads.Or people just realizing they do have a right and should use it. It's kind of interesting though and I'm wondering the sudden motivation. I fear none of them ,have no fear of a stray bullet, I've watched everyone and they are pretty cautious with their direction and where they place their targets. Just kind of interesting. I don't practice here because I don't like to display what I have or spark any interest with people I don't really know yet.

I think more people carried than we knew before CCW. I know guys that have been carrying for years And still carry without. They just don't normally tell you. Guns have been rolling around under car seats and in glove boxes for a long time!

OHH...And carry a Glock 9x19, Not all the time, just whenever I feel I need to or want to. Don't really think about it, just kind of grab it when we all go out. Not really fear for myself, just a real fear/reality? of being in a position of not being able to defend my wife or child (or anyone I'm with, really), since that is my responsibility to protect them.

Please keep politics out of thread, topic is about carrying while detecting.

Research conducted by Professors James Wright and Peter Rossi for a landmark study funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, points to the armed citizen as possibly the most effective deterrent to crime in the nation. Wright and Rossi questioned over 1,800 felons serving time in prisons across the nation and found:

  • 81% agreed the "smart criminal" will try to find out if a potential victim is armed.
  • 74% felt that burglars avoided occupied dwellings for fear of being shot.
  • 80% of "handgun predators" had encountered armed citizens.
  • 40% did not commit a specific crime for fear that the victim was armed.
  • 34% of "handgun predators" were scared off or shot at by armed victims.
  • 57% felt that the typical criminal feared being shot by citizens more than he feared being shot by police.
Professor Kleck estimates that annually 1,500-2,800 felons are legally killed in "excusable self-defense" or "justifiable" shootings by civilians, and 8,000-16,000 criminals are wounded. This compares to 300-600 justifiable homicides by police. Yet, in most instances, civilians used a firearm to threaten, apprehend, shoot at a criminal, or to fire a warning shot without injuring anyone.
Based on his extensive independent survey research, Kleck estimates that each year Americans use guns for protection from criminals more than 2.5 million times annually. 7 U.S. Department of Justice victimization surveys show that protective use of a gun lessens the chance that robberies, rapes, and assaults will be successfully completed while also reducing the likelihood of victim injury. Clearly, criminals fear armed citizens.

Look at that! An actual cited study with the questions actually posed to persons actually involved in crimes. That is a lot more beliveable than the generic CNN "studies show that people who own guns are more likely to be killed" blah, blah, blah.

Good job!

One problem Jason - Quite a few people these days can't be bothered with facts, they've made their minds up and that's it.

Gentlemen, again please stay on topic, topic is carrying while detecting...

I haven't been to the beach yet, I will be packing my kel tec pf-9.Never know who wants a free MD

Nitric,

I'm fairly fortunate that my area is quite safe....but there's one section that armed or not I wouldn't detect because the street gangs are just to crazy.

I was just picking from active topics and kind of jumped in with my nonsense without really reading the whole thread until after my post!:laughing7: As far as detecting and carrying? I usually go where people aren't around or very few. I have carried detecting and that kind of depends if anyone is with me or where I'm going. If I just walk into the woods I do usually bring it, I guess more of a self comfort thing. If she (wife) goes with me into the woods I usually always bring it for sure.

I have had some encounters that could have turned bad quick in places you would never think of, one being on our own land metal detecting, rock hounding and kind of just exploring basically in the middle of no where! Another being in my own driveway, with valuables. If it's just running to the local park here? Not usually, there are people around and I don't really worry about it. Area means a lot! Not saying something isn't going to happen, but chances of it are different. My logic to why I carry and when Kind of changes at times too depending on a few things! :laughing7: I'm use to guns I've seen a lot of people carry legally and some not, so it doesn't bother me if people chose to carry or not for whatever reason they have. Sometimes we don't know someones past and if it helps me or someone else to feel safe or that we have the power/Right to protect people we love or ourselves? As long as they are cautious I don't see a problem.

Nitric,

I tend to agree maybe some people took my earlier post in a negative way....I come from a family that are big on hunting to put food on the table....I did boot camp for military reserve so I have experience with firearms.

My comments were just generic that it's unfortunate that things have evolved to the point people feel the need to carry when going out in public....nothing of a political nature....it's unfortunate that things have gotten to the point where people feel the need/requirement to do so.

I guess I was feeling a bit nostalgic for a simpler time.

Carring while hunting is fine. So long as all rules are in check there's no problem. Some places to detect are remote. Gotta watch out for jack the bear in de woods as well. After reading the thread I'm surprised to be honest. Hhgl-Joe

Yes, I kind of got sidetracked on you!Just wanted to ramble! Sorry about that! :laughing7: I dream of a simpler time also!:occasion14:

Just remember not to carry when detecting school yards ... sort of a hassle because it also means I can't park in the school parking lot. If someone calls the police because I look suspicious, digging holes in a school yard, I definitely do not want to be carrying.. or carrying in my car on school grounds.

The beach though sure! Not during the day, but for example, hunting the beach at midnight, or maybe 3am when the bars get out DEFINITELY.
