why is it

Rockhound:

Roosevelt dimes were minted from 1946 till present. Loved that story.

Tank, I know what you were getting at. The merry Leprechan does as
well. It hurts to get slammed when a simple post is barbequed like theat.

I don't think Buckles was aiming his comments at you, rather at the
types who are in it for the money only.

Now you two mend the fence and get back to dirt fishing.

Not sure why I am gettin in the middle of this but here goes. First off I respect both Tank and Buckles for there knowledge and ability to post what is on their minds without sugar coating it. Tank is my bro and I was around to help after his freak of nature bike accident. I didn't see Buckles post as a personal attack but an opinion on the matter in general. I sell almost all my gold but only to fund my hobby. Anytime my machine can pay for its self I go for it. I also can understand where Tank comes from when it comes to negative comments as far as selling goes. I have heard from many hunters that they won't sell anything, and that they are keeping their finds as an investment. I always tell em that as an investment they are insinuating they have the plans to sell in the future. So what does it matter if any of us sell now or later. It just seems to be a matter of opinion, and financial situation as to wether we sell or not. And always comes back to a personal decision as to what we do with our own treasures. The forum here is not always gonna give us the type of opinions we want to here, and that's the way it should be. All of us are unique individuals with differant ideas when it comes to just about everything. I wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks for your time.

I have rolled up my clad coins and bought searchcoils and gear (back when I regularly found clad). I sold a crock I found last and re-invested $500 in the hobby. I figure selling two finds in 17 years ain't bad...

Personally if I sold everything all the time, I feel it would change me as a detctorist--and I don't want to change.

This hobby for me is just that: a hobby. And I figure that "not selling" is the sure-fire path to see it stay that way.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

I always said there are two Categories of Metal Detectorist, those that detect for the Monetary Value and those that detect for the Historical Value.
I have never sold any of my Historical Finds, but have donated a couple relics to the Museum. I give all of my Clad Coins away as I figure they will be lost again at some Playground and those that are into the Monetary Value will enjoy recovering them. History is the only thing I hunt for and hearing a price about a find only helps tell me the Rarity of it.

I have 5 Children and times do get rough, I know how it is sometimes to get to looking around the place and wonder what there might be to sell or pawn to help pay the bills, but to me selling part of My Historical Finds would be like selling part of my Soul.
I will admit that I am a slacker on my other Hobby and that is Chevy ll Nova's. I have no problem using it to cover the Monetary Value issues as they Sell 21st Century Replacement Parts :laughing7:.

We all like Swinging a Coil, Sometimes We just use Different Modes.

Nova Treasure

I'm in it for the booty. Us pirates loves our booty ;D

Seriously, it is a hobby for me, and I've only found one item worth selling. If I happen upon something substantial, I will sell it. I wouldn't mind a boat, and I know I could finance one a lot quicker by getting a part time job. However, after working 2-3 jobs for 20 years, I'm not about to ever do that again. That is a lot of time I will never get back.

I'm not bashing anyone in this post, just publishing my opinion.

Wife has most of the diamond ring finds I have found, a couple were too small for her. I have a necklace with the rest of the gold rings. If I needed to sell one or all to pay bills, or something the family needed I would in a heartbeat. Since I haven't needed to so far I continue to save them. I would sell them before I would sell any major pieces in my artifact collection.

I also dealt in, collected, and sold antique newspapers for years. I still have some prize pieces, and wish I had some back that I sold.

I really regret selling a Harpers Weekly with the lead story on the front page was the death notice of Thomas Jefferson, and inside of it was a letter written by T. Jefferson to the newspaper in Philadelphia declining to attend the anniversary ceremony of the signing of the Declaration Of Independence due to his ill health. It also contained the death notice of John Adams

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on July 4, 1826, the 50Th anniversary to the day of the signing of the Declaration Of Independence. I sold it for $600 in 1993...

Everything I find goes to the local museum. (We're paid to dig!)

Now that's a DREAM JOB. :)
Would that we all could find that kind of employment :hello2:

Me too. It's a gradual rebuild of a ghost town going on 15 years now. I started off in excavation and now I'm in construction. Insert> :thumbsdown icon: (Why is there no thumbsdown icon?)

I'm not qualified to comment here as we're paid to excavate. Nothing we find is our's. Or rather it's "OUR'S" and goes to the museum.

Keep up the good work LikelyGuy

I have been volunteering my help to a local Archaeology project that has been doing test excavating of the proposed Lewis and Clark hiking trail along the Ohio River in Indiana, performing a preliminary archaeological survey before construction begins.

We recently have discovered what is believed to be a major site and it looks like construction in that area will be delayed until a complete excavation is performed, very exciting stuff. Of course all the artifacts we uncover will eventually be property of the local Museum. So far just in our test holes we have uncovered pottery sherds, animal bone, chert/flint flakes, and tooled artifacts. No human burials so far and I hope we do not find any, as that would halt excavation.

It doesn't matter to me whether you sell or not. I, personally roll all my clad change, and at the end of the summer I cash it in at the bank. It will never be worth more than it is now, anyway. My silver and gold, I keep. I may need a retirement fund to fall back on, or may fall on hard times, one never knows what life will throw at you in the future. If it is a rare or really valuable piece, I may try to contact a museum or collector to display it. To me it is only a hobby, so I look at it as I would any other hobby, it is for pleasure and enjoyment. The thrill of never knowing what you might pass over next. It is also interesting to ponder what was found and how it got there in the first place, or who lost it. It was put into perspective a long time ago by an old man who lived near me. I had been detecting an old farm house, and just got home. He saw me with my detector and out of curiosity asked me what I was doing and what that was. After I explained what it was and how I used it, I showed him a rosie dime I had found. He looked at the date 1923 then said he remembered where he was in 1923. He claimed he was working for a farmer making a penny a day plus eats. He said in 1923, whoever lost that rosie lost a weeks wages. It helped put everything into perspective. He's long gone, but the lesson was learned. I had a greater respect for those lost coins and relics of the past. Happy Hunting. rockhound

This doesn't have to get personal.

I Agree.

So why was your First post a Personal attack ?

Tank69 Sell your Finds if you wish.
I See no problem with it.
Didn't Mel fisher sell some of his ?

Mel sure did and an investor and friend of Mels gave me some of his coins from the atocha(not for sale). I took all my dug crumpled gold and had it melted down and wrapped around two beautiful 68 ct.muzo mine emeralds for me and my gal. Much better than in a display cabinet where people would say what is that crumpled old gold !!! Dug jewelry has no value to me other than the fun of finding and the weight. I get enough weight I will have something else made.
Artifacts and Cw I could not bare to sell. To much history in the hand .Take care of family first in whatever you do.
My thoughts
Cheers
