wild parrots

these parrots visit the bird bath and feeder daily.....they are wild, there is about 5-6 of them that live up in a palm tree near by, they have been around for the last 3 years. I guess they are happy.

Unless the photo was taken in SW Africa (the natural range of the peach-faced lovebird), they must be escapees or descendants of escapees...........

Two very pretty Sun Conures there. I have a female Eclectus ( Vosmaeri) and a Quacker.

Yeah I see small flocks of them flying around down here all the time. All kinds of exotic non native wildlife roams these parts. I own a few birds myself. The cockatiel landed on my shoulder several years back after a hurricane.

I took out pet insurance on Ruby, vet bills for Parrots are extremely high....The insurance isn't as much as it use to be, or as you would think.....$14 a month for Ruby.....

The red and green macaw (Shea) is about 15, we got him from a lady that didn't take care of him properly. She kept him in a room in a corner by himself 90% of the time and didn't give him any attention. He was hard to get tamed, it took a year or so before he would trust anyone. Now he's friendlier than the hybrid (Bud), the one on the bottom of the sofa who is about 20 years old. The umbrella cockatoo (Frosty) is only 10 and is the friendliest (and most spoiled) of them all. So they're all pretty young as far as parrots go. Birds make great pets but they do require alot (emphasis on alot) of attention. So far so good on the vet bills but I may have to look into insurance myself, it's only a matter of time before my luck runs out.

Ruby had a problem about 9 months ago. A couple times I would be in another room and I would hear a crash when she was in her cage on her perch and go in to see what it was and see her climbing back up onto her perch. I checked her and didn't see anything wrong. After it happen the 3rd time I took her to a vet, he couldn't find anything wrong with her, ran a bunch of tests for a total of $250 including the office call of $80 and all were negative. He told me she appeared to be very healthy, and that he could run more tests that were extensive if I wanted them, but the total of those tests were $775.

I told him to hold off, as every thing was negative so far and took her home, she was fine for a couple weeks then heard her fall again. I took her back to the vet and this time we found the problem, her leg band would slide down past her knee to her lower leg and was cutting off circulation to the leg, the fall would jar it lose and she was normal when we checked her, we cut the band off.

Ruby lost almost 2 ounces due to the stress from it. She is back now to 1lb 1 ounce and very healthy. It was after that and seeing the cost of the tests I looked into the insurance and figured out if I had the insurance it would have covered over $175 of my first bill and over $600 of $775 if I had had the tests done.... I was sold then....

Parrots are great pets, the only pet I know that will walk up to you, look at you then say "I love you", but they depend on you to take care of them....As you know it is like having a 3-5 year old child depending on the Parrot and age......Ruby is great I can go anywhere with her and she will stay right on my shoulder, inside or outside does not matter. I take her to garage sales all the time, and have gotten a lot of free items I was going to buy, just because of Ruby and her antics....

Thanks for the link. That was some story about the leg band. Just goes to show, you never know. I'm glad you found out what was causing the problem. I may have to try that trick with the yard sales with Frosty, the 2 macaws are just too big to be packing around besides they don't like too many people, and I know what you mean about a 3-5 year old child. Anyway didn't mean to hijack your post DanB.

Untended my house would be uninhabitable in about 3 days lol, they can't be left alone for more than a couple hours. Cleaning is one day per week about 3 hrs to do cages etc. Playing is a full time job however.

Ours live in a "condo" cage with a play area on top......Can't but them in same cage together.

I clean the cage daily and take it outside and wash it down with jet spray once a week. It takes about an hour to do that. I tiled a 4'x4' area where the cage is, that gets cleaned daily.

When Ruby is loose she wears a flight suit with a pad inside, basically a diaper, throw the pad away when I take the flight suit off...... No poopies on the floor or on my shoulder when we go out. Jade (Quaker) perfers staying on top of the cage mostly while Ruby likes to roam the house a lot looking for my wife and I....

You mean to tell me, that the birds don't try to remove the flight suits? Most animals refuse to wear anything not natural to their existence, I know my Lhasa Apso doggy won't even let you put anything on him ( unless you don't care about your fingers ). I got bit, just trying to muzzle him ...............NGE

I have been putting the suit on Ruby (Eclectus) since she was 3 months old, she doesn't care at all, takes me all of maybe 10 seconds to put hers on, once on she pays no attention to it at all. On Jade (Quaker) it takes maybe 15-20 secs to put hers on, mostly because she is small. when she is wearing it, she is not as active with it on and does occasionaly bite at it on her back but mostly tolerates it. I started putting it on her when she was 9 months and that may be why.
