We spent the best part of 4 hours finishing off the near 2 acre Winter Stubble Field. It was a poor field, but we had hoped for just 1 hammered by covering it all, & we got 2 crappy ones instead, right on last knockings.
Other finds included:
Crotal Bell
Jetton
Livery Button
Lead Token
2 Scrappies, 1 1st C As with a square nail hole
Over 50 buttons

We only did just over 1 hour on the Sewage Site but it turn out great. (Picture 4) As well as the 4 Roman Coins, running hound part of a Roman folding knife, I managed to pinch a Celtic Gold of Cru'dads run. It was in a lump on the top, broke it opened & saw the edge & guessed it might be part of a gold ring.:laughing7: My first of this tribe:

Celtic Gold Quarter Stater circa 60BC of the Morini (meaning sea people) tribe who live in between France/Belgium. Thought to be a boat with 2 occupants & a tree like image on the reverse.:headbang: (Classified as 'common', but when it's your first, it makes little difference):icon_thumright:

Congratulations Cru, That is a gorgeous stater and your other finds are stunning too. Hope to get back over and try my luck in Colchester again sometime. Cheers.
Yeap, Colchester is a far richer area than where I am.

Wow!
Amazing Celtic gold!
On a slightly unrelated note, I've always wondered what the coin on your profile is? Looks different from anything I've ever seen.

I would imagine that their size, number minted, and the year span they were used would factor in there somewhere too, when it comes to why more are found vs later gold coins.

Good timing of this question, so more related than you knew.:laughing7: Because it was found on this field I'm doing at the moment (Sewage Site, although back then we had no name for it, as it was our first year on it) on the 04 Apr 2016:
http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/498040-failed-bean-field-3-hammered.html
(Bramblefind kindly IDed it on the above post)
I had no idea what it was either, but perfect for my AVATAR:

Maybe in my early days, but I think the bar is now raised for me & this is a 'common' Celtic Coin. The Gold Noble that was just found is a no brainer.

Maybe for the Morini golds, but you seriously kill it the Roman bronzes/artifacts. Your single year on finds quality/quantity in compassion to the 10 of Colchester's.

A member posted up how many yrs/weeks/days/hrs he had spent to get the number of golds, and I believe it worked out on the average of 1 every 270/90 hrs of detecting in the fields.
It's a numbers game he keeps saying, just have to dig enough holes.

Nope for everything. If I were using our tactics in the Colchester area, you would see a marked improvement on all aspects of our finds.

Not cold for me yet, until I put the gloves on. I think it happens about 3 times last Winter, hardly call it a Winter now-a-days.

celtic gold is always the best! what do you suppose is the greatest range of dates of coins you have found on the same day in the same field?

When I started detecting as a kid, I wanted to find one of these & thought it a near impossible task. It took nearly 20 years to get my first & that was an experience I will never forget. I thought it was a gilt button to begin with & I was making such a song & dance the owner came out of his house to see what was going on. It was in a small paddock behind his farm house. They are always a thrill to get but a little less each time you get one. I think it will take a Roman or Saxon Gold for me to get that same reaction, but once again it feels impossible. Hence the true surprise if it were to happen in my lifetime.
It was found only a year after joining Tnet:
http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/91466-find-my-lifetime-update-leading-expert.html

At the time it was like a find of a lifetime, now Cru'dad & I average 2 a year, something we would never of believed back then.
