Past: Teknetics eurotek pro, Minelab xterra 705, At pro, Fisher f75 se, Explorer SE PRO, bounty hunter

All Treasure Hunting
I found my first silver over the weekend. I took YOTE who is a fellow detector I met on here out to my spot over the weekend and he found an 1872 seated quarter and a silver knife at the old invisible homestead lol. We followed an old road behind the home site and that is where I found my silver button. I went back out today after work for an our on the old barely visible road and my first good signal was my first civil war bullet. I knew there had to be something from the civil war around my site, because there is a confederate training camp around a mile from there. I also found a mystery bullet about twenty feet from the civil war bullet and it is just as big and heavy. I have no info on silver buttons and would like to know if it could be tied to the civil war era and would also like to know what this mystery bullet could be? silver butt. 2.webpciv war 1.webpciv war 2.webpciv war 3.webpsilver butt..webp

the button is quite white in appearance , but other than that, is there anything that gives you confidence in the composition
being silver ?

nice finds congrats HH

I have to agree, you should take it to a jewelry shop to have it tested. Here is a picture of a similar button that I found. I think the one I found is just aluminum. HH, SilverPirate.

Awesome finds. I hope your buddy will be posting his silver knife. Those are my favorite finds. HH

I had a more experienced hunter with me and he said he could tell it was silver just by the sound of my minelab, but I followed the steps to cleaning silver and it had really bad black tarnish on it. It cleaned up perfect. Maybe I will take it to a jewelry shop. Would there be any significance if it is pure silver? Im pretty sure it is.

He's a new member on here and I don't think hes ever posted a find, but he's been detecting for over 15 years and gave me a lot of information about my detector that i've been needing.

It is rather unlikely that the button is made of "pure" silver - fine silver (.999) is very soft , not suitable for utilitarian items like
a button - if it is silver , it is likely sterling (.925) or "coin" (.900)

Nice finds. Keep swinging and the silver will follow!

Had it taken to a jewelry shop and they said it passed the test. Its silver!

I was wondering if the squashed bullet could have been from the civil war time because it is just as big and heavy as the other bullet. I found it a few feet away from the other one and I was also wondering what time frame the button came from as it was in the same area as well and with it being silver I don't think its modern.

My button finds like that have always been aluminum or pewter must be nice to get a silver one. At old sites you will find lead in all shapes. Have had melted hunks up to several pounds before out here.

Awsome finds indeed - congrats

OK, the squashed 'bullet' looks to be a shotgun slug.

I have never heard of or read about those types of button being made of silver. I also find along with my Dad about 500 of this type (ie. 2 or 4 holed buttons) a year & we have never had a silver one in 30 combined years of hunting. The obivious reason they are not made in silver is because they were never 'on display', so to hide your wealth like that makes little sense. They were also mainly on cheaper clothing.

Well I have no idea. All I know is that it is silver and was hoping someone could enlighten me on why and when

The 'why' it is silver is the most interesting, because assuming the test is accurate, it would be very rare. I would love to hear from anyone with sources of this being made in silver? These are used in lots of different clothes but as a general rule its on underwear & shirts, from the late 19th C until today. Although most are now plastic & not metal.
One possibility I suppose is that it was used a some kind of ladies 'fashion' item on a bag or similar, but thats a WAG to try & explain it being silver & therefore 'on show'.

Looks like a shirt button, I see nothing wrong with it being Silver, some of the shirts made for the soldiers going to the war were quite elaborate, I believe, not saying this is from the CW. Not sure about the date though.

yeah, I took it to another jeweler today and he said it passed the test, but he wasnt sure it was silver. He said he actually has no clue. He said it was really weird that the weight didn't feel right. He thought it was plastic and had to get his detector out and run it over it to make sure lol. He said he had never seen anything like it but it passed the both tests. It is also non magnetic.
