Wut to do during Winter?

I live in NY so the winters here are pretty bad, for whoever else has to deal with winter, wut do u do about detecting? do u take breaks or just travel places where it isnt snowing, cuz the winters comin up pretty soon and it looks like im gonna have to go into hypernation with detecting for a while.

If we can't get out which is fairly rare, a few cold snaps for a while, we clean, oil and sharpen our diggers getting them ready for that window that shows up. Time to clean the detector well and wax it, check for frayed cables, etc as well as research and drive the countryside.

research is probally the best bet, here in the U.P. to go in the woods you need a snowmobile 3 to 6ft of snow on the ground and when you dug through that probally at least a foot of frost. a few years back some of the towns the water lines were freezing, blocks at a time. pipes were down 5 ft, guess they had to go a little deeper. Oh yeah i do alot of research.

I live a few minutes drive from old gold mines. I've already got about 60 pounds of gold bearing dirt/gravel from the streams they have found gold. I plan on panning the dirt in the warm TV room with football on the dish. If i run out it's a short trip to get some more. I did pan about three pan fulls so far ... a few tiny tiny specks. I hoping for some pickers and maybe a nugget if i am lucky. Maybe drive around and try to find some older parks to search for spring.

Snow is easy to dig in so try sledding/tubing hills during the mornings for fresh keepers. jewelry, coins, gold teeth fillings, etc.

Im also from the freezing, blizzarding northeast. AND I LOVE IT!!!

Do you think i could take my ACE 250 out into the snow to hunt? How cold do you think it could make it through? Wont the wires or screen freeze at around 20 degrees? Any thoughts and ideas would be great!

P.S. Whoever had the idea on the sledding hills... THANKS! I was getting all depressed about this exact same thing.

After the holidays, check out any vacant lots where people sell Christmas trees. Cold hands hurriedly digging into pockets, making change, etc. You get the idea. Better yet, ask around and find out where they used to sell them years ago. At one time this was a popular moneymaker for the Boy Scouts, 4H Club, FFA, and church groups in many communities, and back before silver went out of circulation a lot of dimes, quarters, and half dollars changed hands in those locations.

Great ideas, I was trying to count the weeks 'til frost. Not so worried about it now. Now just hope for snow and not just bitter cold.

Don't forget the rings possible when the gloves are pulled off to get to the wallet or pocket.

I am looking for a old grave yard now covered in weeds
and I am waiting for the winter .

There is suppoose to be a old slave house now burned down
not far from the grave yard but cannot locate because of the
high weeds and and dumping.

Also will not have to worry about snakes ect.

another thing i do is after Christmas is go around and look at all the chirs. tree people throw out they don't always get all the ornaments i find a few of them and pass the time

i live in northern ny too that'sthe time to spend some time at the library and do some research.go through the microfilms of old newspapers and see what was going on years ago.
