Went back to a spot I found last week that had late 1800s pottery with hopes of finding a nearby house site.
Found this in that area and is out of place with the other relics dug there so it must a be a hunter's drop as this is a deep woods site. Had me all excited when I popped it out until I brushed the dirt off and saw the Great Seal, damnit it was supposed to be a Palmetto tree
.
I know the Great Seal came out shortly before WW1 and get the feeling by it's design that this may even be later than that and thinking maybe WW2. Being Marine Corps I'm out of my element as to what service this belongs to as it isn't Marine Corps.
It is 1.5 inches across. The back side has a threaded post and did have two small spurs to help hold it from twisting after it was seated on I assume a cap. I managed to break one spur off while trying to straighten it out as it was bent over.
Any help with age and what exactly it is?
