Yesterday's Colonial Recoveries

I got out yesterday to a couple colonial sites. Both sites have been hit hard by my digging partner and myself, but if you go slow and listen hard, you can always find something at these spots. I was happy to dig the cuff link with the anchor motif at the first site. I had dug another one of these years ago at another site. One of the large tombacs has a raised rim, which I think may be the only one I have ever dug like that. My last signal of the day as I was walking out of the field at the second site was a 1781 George III Hibernia. This coin would have been half decent if it was dug in good ground, but as you can see the ground here just devours copper. To illustrate this point, the last picture shows all 19 coppers I have dug here since I found the place last year. Thankfully, I have also found 6 Spanish and 2 early US silvers here. That takes some of the sting away from all the toasted coppers!

Nice hunt Steve. It's always satisfying to scrouge out a few more finds at a pounded site. And, like you, I don't believe I've ever dug a raised rim tombac like the one you found. Cool find!

Nice finds! Those are really nice colonial pieces you have there! Congrats and HH!

nice finds sir, i know what you mean about PA ground murdering colonial coppers, out of the 10 or 11 ive found lately i can only legitamately pull dates off of 3, my oldest (draped bust) is currently in an olive oil spa, hopefully i can get the crud off and pull a date

Nice finds Steve in PA!

I think there's at least one more piece of silver hiding in there somewhere. We'll have to hit once more before the grass gets to high.

Great finds Steve.really like that cuff link.

Nice cufflink and other finds there Steve. We are digging a site right now that is bad ground and is toasting our military buttons, which is a bummer too!

msot of my coppers are the same way haha its the worst, nice hunt tho i guess we cant expect much more from a coin that has been in the ground over 200 years. HH

I wonder maybe it has something to do with Rhode Island that is the state symbol..:icon_scratch:

Blaze

Hey Blaze, the anchor was a common motif back then and still is. Look at all the modern blazer jacket buttons we find with anchors on them that are totally unrelated to the navy or Rhode Island. I have dug two of these anchor cuff links now and saw one other that was dug in my area. It was just a popular design back around 1780 - 1800.

nice colonial finds !
