YES....the hunting weather is finally here. I am not going to have near as much time to hunt this year...so I wanted to get out today. The ground is still mucky in many spots but it's okay in a few others. I like this time of year because the grass isn't grown up yet and you get more depth. It seems like from the end of April on...I'm always contending with 6" to 8" high grass...and you can't get the coil within 3" of the ground which costs you valuable depth. I used the combo of the 6" excelerator coil along with the 1050 coil and every coin I dug was from 7" to 9" deep. I popped out the first merc and saw the CLEAR 1916 date and my heart skipped a couple of beats cause it's in great shape. Said a little prayer...turned it over...but NO D mint mark. ??? I tried every angle in every way...but no matter which way I looked at it...STILL NO D. ::) Oh well...it's probably the nicest 1916 I've ever found
I plugged along a pretty iron infested stretch and found a couple of wheaties along with 2 silver roosey's. I just slow way down when I'm in an iron infested area and listen for the slightest peeps...then try every angle. If I get that sweet silver sound...even from only one way...I'm diggin! 3 of the 4 silver coins I found only hit in one spot when I circled the hole and the cursor was dancin around...but the sound was so sweet in just that one little spot...I dug
I then popped on the 6" Excelerator coil and hit the trashy part. I popped out a 1918 wheatie from right at 9" down next to a rusty nail. I hunted for another hour or so...then got another sweet one way hit...but again...just that one little spot was a very nice silver hit...so I dug. Out popped the very nice 1923-S Merc. with a pull tab about 2" away in the bottom of the hole. :icon_sunny:
Good luck to you all on your next hunt.

Yipeeee, for you. Glad to see you posting some finds again. What is this"I won't be able to hunt as much this year" That is a neg. statement , which is not allowed in detecting. You can't take away from metal detecting because it causes depression and that is anti-productive in your work. It is good to here you say slow mode is finding the deep coin in the trash. I have been preaching it for years. Keep on diggin.

Nice coins you got there silverfreak. Too bad about the no "D" on that merc. Maybe next 1916 will have it.

Right on!! Nice Scores, 4 Silvers in bout 3 hrs definitely worth the effort. I was hoping it was a D too...Cool Pics...HH

Q. When you say 7 to 9 inches deep...Is that including the difference from the ground to the bottom of the Coil?

Nice hunt. I found a 1916 merc last year and had the same type of heart stoppage. A good adrenaline rush if only for a couple seconds. :)

Hi Les. I have some family members who are ill so my hunting will have to be when I can get it in. I sure as heck wouldn't let work get in the way

Thanks Wyattrr. When I say 7" to 9" deep I mean that some coins were found 7" deep and some were found as deep as 9". The lip of my Lesche digger is 7"..so when I locate the coin in the hole I just stick the digger in there with the point at the bottom. If the lip is level with the ground...then it's a 7" deep coin. If the lip is an inch under the ground level...then it's a 8" deep coin.
