Zeros CRH LOG

I forgot to summarize my monthly finds in July and August.

July: 12 silver keepers plus 8 silvers purchased with scrapping funds

August: 18 silver keepers

September is looking like a positive trend with 24 keepers so far. Hopefully I can get at least 6 more finds next week to get back to a silver per day rating.

Summer was a bit dry in the silver department, but Fall has potential.

Keep on rolling!

I was just curious what kind of silvers you buy using your scrapping funds. Also wondering where you purchase your silvers: online? Local coin shop? With silver being as cheap as it is right now I think this is a very smart move on your part, because I believe our fiat dollars are losing value quickly and will probably lose it even more quickly as inflation turn into hyper-inflation.

I bought off of eBay. I bought some low mintage halves : 1913p barber and 1938d Walker. I paid a premium for them about $35 for the barber and $26 for the Walker. I also bought some common date walkers and some 40%'s for close to spot with shipping.

I figured it would be hard to come by key dates in rolls, so that's why I bought the rare ones. Depending on the numismatic market, I got good deals on them, but who knows.

I have also purchased some walkers and bens from provident metals. They are legit but prices are a bit higher than ebay on average.

I also got ripped off by the World Reserve Monetary exchange, but I did get a refund, so not a total loss.

Good luck and keep on rolling!

Yeah, you might as well buy the key dates when spot price is low because the odds of finding key dates, especially Barbers in coin rolls is slim to none. I'm guessing that even coins with numismatic value are a little cheaper when spot price is down, so you probably got a good deal on your numismatics as well as your 40%ers. Unfortunately I bought several months ago at $22 an ozt., so congrats on your great timing.

One of my boxes didn't come in, but I did have a teller hold on to three rosies for me.

Nice finds. And its good having nice tellers looking at for you so you can get the keepers without having boxes to search and dump. Your almost at 50 ozs of silver now. Maybe next week you'll pass the 50 oz mark. Good luck. I got a box from Thursday to finish this wknd. So far I've found a '67 ender in the 5th roll so Im hoping for at least a couple of more keepers from the box.

H$H!

Thanks SF...I hope you find lots of silver in the rest of that box!

That just goes to show it pays to make friends with the tellers. That's something I need to work on. How did you go about getting that teller to help you out? What kept him/her from snagging the silver for him/herself?

I haven't had much luck in the past with teller saves, but she said that in order to keep them herself she would have to sell them to another teller and then buy them from them (sounds a bit silly) and she knew that it would make my day...so she opted for sharing the wealth. I have been extra friendly to this group of tellers.

At the same bank two years ago, I got my first and biggest score: 58 silver halves including 2 barbers, 4 walkers, 11 bens, and 20 64's...it was awesome.

Holy cow! You hit the mother-lode that day. Was it from customer wrapped rolls or loose halves saved by the tellers?

CWR's...I didn't get any back story about who brought them in and I never told the tellers about the silver (I avoid direct interest in silver but emphasize the collecting aspect...seems to help). $240 in halves with almost three solid rolls. I've gotten a couple more solid rolls over the past several months but nothing like that first haul.

The closest thing I've ever had to a solid roll was a customer wrapped roll of dimes with 22 mercury dimes in it. Some day I hope to stumble upon the mother-lode like you did. So far it hasn't happened for me. No complaints, though, because I've made my share of nice finds, just not the mega-find.
I also avoid the topic of silver in talking with tellers. I do my best to come off as a merchant, but if that doesn't work, and they ask me what I'm looking for, I say, "I'm looking for error coins and rare dates". That usually satisfies them. I go to great lengths to maintain a low profile. When I was brand new in the hobby, it didn't take me long to figure out there are certain things that irritate tellers and bankers. I have the good fortune of living in a large metropolitan area, so I often travel across the city in my employment, so I can drop off and pick up at many, many different banks. It also helps that I have accounts at several different banks. No single bank branch will ever see me more than once a month--in fact usually once every three months. By using some strategy and common sense, I have been able to avoid irritating any bankers. In fact, many of them think I'm a merchant. When I do pick-ups and dumps I often wear a shirt I have from a hamburger stand, and they think I'm in the hamburger business. It's pretty funny when they start asking questions about the hamburger business and I answer very nonchalant that things are going great at the burger joint.

Wow, that's was certainly a great score worth remembering. That score was similar to my best score ever that I found 3 years ago this month. My score was from 8 cwrs and $11 loose and had a total of 63 silver I believe - including 3 solid rolls of Walkers and Bens (no Barbers though). It will be hard for either of us to top these great scores - but maybe someday. Just never know with this hobby. That's what keeps it so interesting.

I often dream of the day I find solid rolls of silver. I know that it will eventually happen if I stick with the hobby. I have no intention of quitting the hobby. I'm hooked.

Brinks half box #83: skunk

Well, if you read my post in the main forum, then you know I left two boxes of halves in my truck, and they were stolen. Its a bummer. So, I canceled my weekly orders. I have a couple boxes I'll have to buy with other funds next week, but then I'll take a break from boxes for a while. I plan to be in the game again by January. I'll post occasionally with CWR finds.

Final totals for the shortened year: 296 silver keepers with almost 50 ounces of silver. It's about a wash against the stolen boxes, but I had lots of fun. Keep on rolling!

I suppose its never a good time to have a big financial loss but at least you were able to find a nice pile of silver this year before your loss. Maybe you'll have another nice cwr score sometime soon to help make up for your recent loss. Best of luck to you.

Thanks SilverFace. You have been very encouraging. It's a loss, but it wasn't rent or grocery money at least. I had saved $2500 at one point for my CRH bank roll. I put half of it towards some household expenses that came up over the summer and now a $1000 to thieves. Which leaves $250. I could at least do a box of dimes each week or just cwr. So, it's not a total loss.

Sorry to hear this buddy. I immediately went out to my car and took out a bunch of coin that was waiting to go to the bank.

Hope you rebound quickly and don't be afraid to hit nickels for a little. They still give up some silver and other fun finds.

Steven

Tough luck on the stolen halves. I wish you the best of luck in bouncing back from a tough setback. This hobby rewards consistency and tenacity, so I admire your decision to shake off the loss and keep on truckin'.
