Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Hey guys,
You hear a lot of fellows talk about the owls and tell you they are special.
But they never show you what one looks like.

Here is a nice one that would have been overlooked on a different day, it hides really well and may only be visible at a certain time of day or sun angle.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

I was wondering if owls almost always have two ears as in the picture above? Its a beauty. Thanks.

Also, when examining the hole in the rock below, which seems to be a trail marker ( there is one every 40 paces or so, but let me know if you think it is not.) ..what should I consider or measure? The rock is likely 3-5 feet tall.

Getting my gps in a few days and hope it helps in making sense of all I have found on this site.

They usually did use a horned type owl as a sign.
many time they simply used a capitol letter M.
There is another sign that resembles an elongated single lined flying bird with eye spots under the wings.
It looks like a lowercase M with spots under the humps.

Moons,

The hole may be a natural one, does it make a peep hole?
If not it may have just been used to prove an oddity in the trail.
30 to 40 paces is just about consistant with a normal trail.
If the signs all start to get smaller consistently...
and they start to get as close together as 11 to 14 paces,
you will want to go a little slower and make sure not to miss anything.
You will (by experience ) find false trails that will lead you out into nowhere .
and you will have trouble distinguishing true signs from false ones meant to mislead.
It will be nice to have a GPS reading to come back to,
instead of hunting half a day for the original starting point.
No need to measure anything as of yet.
If your signs are still 40 paces apart... just follow them out.
don't worry about the measurements yet.

(make the measuring easy and get a piece of cloths line measure off 25 Varas and carry it with you.
Mark off the varas with a Sharpie Marker.
( a vara is 33 inches and was the standard measurement of the day)

Hope this helps.
You are sure getting the hang of this stuff.
Kind of fun isn't it?
Thom

The length of the vara depended on who was measuring. I've seen the "official" length run between 30.8 and 35.9 inches. The Texas vara (33.33 inches) is today's legal distance measurement there and is not tied to the Spanish or Mexican varas except by general theory (length of a stride).

I saw one too! My camera sucks so you can't really see it, but here it is. Flew right past my head, scared me to death.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Buddy,
that is a great owl.
Good company too.
I have never been able to catch one like that.
Awesome.

Randy,
They sure can put a start into you.
they sound like a flock of quail when they take off.
Silent once they get moving.
Then almost fearlessly will fly past your head so close you can feel the wind from their wings.

Makes me jump,
every time.
LOL

He was hiding in a small "cave" in the side of the wash as I was hiking through. He flew out and landed in the tree right in front of me :) I took some pictures then he flew towards me right past my head about 4' away or so. It was crazy.

Just suposing...

If a circle indicates a hole or tunnel...
wouldn't a circle filled in with peck marks...

Indicate a tunnel that has been filled in... somewhere ahead?

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

I've not seen anything like that Bob, here in new mexico or on the net or my site. I had hoped to find some petroglyphs of native american origin on my site..but so far no luck. It is rather odd. I sometimes think a radical Fr. or Jesuit might have ordered them all wiped out..or perhaps they just faded away or perhaps it was an area the natives stayed away from for reasons undetermined.

Anyway i wanted to mention the 8 figure seems to have unusual middle to it,. almost as if showing outline of two peaks. Though I have seen a similar but not really same jagged shape on my site both carved into rock and maybe as a stand alone rock. Don't know what they mean.

One ray on the bigger figure looks to be an arrow. Silly me... looking it all over I would take a look around for twos - two peaks, two upright stones, two windows.I would look for a stream but if no stream to be found i would consider a trap based on the wavy line in the big figure with possible head on it (snake?) and the possible cracked heart on the bottom of the bird pointing up.

Just to see if anything happened to match.

The "sword" next to the bird where the blade curves around...may be a trail I would speculate. Or lets you know you will have to cut off to the left to find the site

Now you have to remember everything I know about spanish marks i learned on the internet - I am holding off on buying books for a bit. So I am not saying the marks mean ANYTHING.

Its just what i would do to see if there happened to be anything around like that. If it panned out..well then i learned something. If not..well mysteries abound lol.

Here's a pointer pointing directly to an old, old, old tunnel not 100 feet away.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Bob,
I'm pretty sure what you have there is a natural occurrence.

But a totally closed, or cleared circle is a sign for a shaft or tunnel.
you may find other signs with it to indicate a shaft that has been covered or may require tools such as ladders to enter. Springfield's post #542 is a good example of a shaft left open.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

I noticed the thing on top of the hill among the rocks. Was wondering what people think and what if any meaning.

Its those "tail feathers" that make me think it might be man made. It explains a mystery if this is a marker.

Heh..had quite a day today, had a religious moment when i poked my nose into a hole, then again when a rock gave away but it all turned out well.

Should have some pics in a day or two for my other thread. Broke down and ordered the field guide from Mr. Pickett.

Thanks!
