So let’s look at the dollars

$200,000 to the state, plus first pick
$400,000 to QJs
$400,000 to finder. Minus taxes. Minus expenses. Plus take into account any investor money.

Best case maybe you walk away with $200k-ish off a million. A real head scratcher.

$200K or 20% for the person doing all the work, but 80% for the people not even lifting a finger.

Do you mean how many people have decided to dive those waters anyway and keep whatever they find without reporting it? If so, who knows how many people have done that, but from what I understand, people in those waters are monitored more closely than the "guests" who come across our Southern borders without an invitation.

I can't imagine what happens to people who get caught. It's not worth the risk. I still can't believe that a private enterprise has the sole rights to detect those waters and they are protected by the state. The Queens Jewels took over the lease in 2010 from Mel Fisher's company. Does that lease ever end?

I did a search on Yahoo about the 1715 lease and look what I came up with. Does this mean that it expired? If so, I guess they're hoping that nobody noticed so they can keep everything for themselves. It sure seems that way.

Somebody should contact a lawyer down in Florida who can verify if this is true or not. If it is not true, then find out when the current lease does expire. Then share the results with us here. We can start a fund to pay for the attorney's fees which will cost quite a bit just for asking one simple question.

Lease has not expired, state still controls the lease, and Queens Jewels owns the lease.

As long as all fees and lease payments to state is paid its their lease. Treasure Coast beaches where leases are will never be open for the general public detecting in water there, there is still way too much gold in the water for the state to surrender it.

Not a fight you can win or want to take on in court either, state law gives ownership of anything in water over 50 years old and state waters extend 3 nautical miles out to sea.

With the amount of gold and treasure they find, I dont see that happening anytime soon.

They get their funding from the taxpayers, therefore anything they should do should benefit the taxpayers instead of favoring any single private enterprise.

If you had invested millions of dollars into finding one of these treasure ships, I doubt you would be happy with just anyone diving on it for their own benefit. I agree the state really shouldn't be a party to it other than managing the leases, but, that's the law until it changes......which isn't likely to happen given the money involved. To me, it should be finders keepers since any recovery effort by the original owners quit years ago. The leases should just keep others from poaching the spot and be a fixed fee to cover whatever bureaucracy is involve to keep track of who owns what. There would have to be some sort of size limit too, to keep one outfit from claiming the whole ocean. The government claiming a fee for someone else's work is just wrong in my book.

Don't forget, and we have discussed this before on this thread,
and our great fellow T-Netters have posted the percentages here.
You can make a deal with various lease holders as a "sub-contractor" and share a percentage of what you find IN THE WATER within the lease zones.

Has nothing to do with being fair, it all belongs to the state according to the law. There is a lot that isn't fair, but it would violate our rules to go into it outside politics forum.

It was private enterprise who found that wreck after tons of money in research and exploration. Why should anyone else have the benefit of that? Without them, the wreck would still be unknown. If you want to find a treasure ship, do your own research and get investors to pony up the money needed to conduct such an operation. Or, you can pay someone who already went through that, and pay them a percentage for diving on THEIR wreck/lease. That's what QJ allows.
