10,000 40%er Club

Any members of this club on the forum? Just curious who has been around long enough to collect that much, even if they have sold a bunch of them to reinvest or diversify.

Not yet In just over 10 years of pretty steady CRH, I'm at about 4,000 40%ers. I will say that in the early years of my CRH time it was barely worth keeping them. Back in 2001 when silver was down around $4.50 or so an ounce (WHY DIDN'T I BUY MORE I did buy some 90% at 3X face back then, crazy isn't it?) a 40%er had a melt value of about 65 cents! So, it wasn't as exciting to find them.....

I'm still in the minor leagues though compared to some of the veteran CRHers on here. I would bet someone has broken 10,000.

I ask, because I am curious how long it takes to get that many. I have heard the pickins' were better in the past, like 2010 was better then 2011 and so on. I am just wondering how many people had the foresight to hit heavy voulme when the interest was much lower.

As Numismaniac mentioned, when silver was $4-5 oz, there was no point in saving 40%ers. When you bought a 40%er for 50 cents you got about 1/7th an oz of silver, that means you are buying silver for $3.38 an oz. As opposed to 90% silver coins, those are $1.38 per oz.

If you look at the price of silver since 1970 it has largely been under $10/oz. So for the last 40yrs the price of silver has been low enough that it hasn't paid to hunt for 40% silver halves.

I have harvested in 2011 227 40%ers, 10,000 is an incredible amount!!

I remember those days... It was very true. It was hardly worth the effort to save the 40% because the coin shop would only pay like $12.50 for the roll. I did accumalate a few rolls of 64's that I did sell for about 3X over face in about 2000-01.

Same here. I would go so far as saying that I've probably thrown back 10k 40%'ers as they just weren't worth culling for reasons already mentioned.

Some day. I am a small quanity searcher, my bank orders me 2 half dollar boxes about once a month. I am on a 10-box skunk streak. I will hopefully get to the 10,000 mark before coins are turned into plastic.

I am about 0.0148% there. ! (148 40%ers)

Wow, I was kind of excited when I hit 100 40%ers a month or so ago. I can't even imagine what level of success I'd need to have to get 100 times that amount!
