Hey everyone!

Today was my best copper day yet...Up until today I'd been working the Trime spot here and there hoping to reach my goal of 40 coppers before the year is out and came up

with one (TOASTED) as well as a buckle here and a little silver there, etc(nothing crazy).

Old School Evan suggested we try an old cellar hole(s) spot and try our luck and what an excellent suggestion it was! Right off the bat I pulled a decent shoe buckle and we

proceeded to work the general areas around the cellar holes. About an hour or so later I was working a small hillside when I got a high tone that sounded like it was a large

aluminum target. I had my doubts but not enough to put me off of flipping a plug and as soon as I did two coppers popped right out! I yelled to Evan and looked into the

hole in the ground and freaked...7 coppers came out of the hole and within inches were the other 3!!! I was totally blown away and frankly I'm still a little jazzed from it!

Before this, 3 in a day was my best so it was a huge thrill! I even pulled a 64 D Rosie just to get on the silver board for good measure ;D

Here's some partial cleaning pics...Had to use my friend's cell to take these pics unfortunately but so far after cleaning the coppers are as follows...

9 Large Cents ~ 1802,1820,1822,1835(looks double struck),1837,1838,1845,1846 and one 1805 King George III Hibernia Halfpenny. When they're better cleaned I'll post

better pics. On the 1835 I can see a double lining along the face (nose, lips) and it's got me curious if it's rare so if anyone has any info feel free to share. Thanks for looking

everyone and best of luck out there! - ~UPDATE~ The coins are now clean enough to post better photos. The cleaning process I'm using is slow and methodical (no hydro) so sorry for the delay. Here's some scanner pics, not the greatest but...

Re: 10 COPPER SPILL!!! Shoe buckle too!

Congrats on your find. I'm hoping I'll get to dig one up some day, but so far the only digging I do for large cents is out of my wallet.

I'm working on a middle date variety set 1816 to 1839 and the doubling of the profile is something that could happen from time to time. Usually you can find varied degrees of doubling from '32 to '35 fairly easily. The story is that there was a press that developed a chatter problem and would bounce a bit on each single coin strike. This started before the 1830's and progressively worsened over time. The doubling that would happen from this chatter appears to only affect the profile, and you don't see doubling from this elsewhere like the stars or date. (I'm assuming it's due to the thickness of the profile as compared to the rest of the devices on the coin.) This type of doubling usually doesn't bring a premium to the coin. If you happen to find one that's pretty widely doubled, or even triple struck or more, sometimes people are willing to pay extra for the uniqueness of it, but most don't consider the profile doubling itself rare. Of course, that doesn't take in to consideration the rarity of the particular variety of the coin itself.

I'd look closely at the doubling with a magnifier, and make sure it's not more than just the double profile. If it has doubling on the stars or date, then it's a actual double struck coin. If you can get the doubling to show up when you take your updated photos, I'd definitely like to see.

Re: 10 COPPER SPILL!!! Shoe buckle too!

Well, you found some folks 5 year quota....in one afternoon. Absolutely fabulous....one can dream, based on
your day. Great work. And, lets see them when you get them cleaned. Already see a couple of them that look
pretty nice. Hope you get back to that area, and find another spill. WoW!!!! WoW!!!!

Re: 10 COPPER SPILL!!! Shoe buckle too!

Fantastic find!!!! I think that it may have been buried on purpose, although the fact that it was a hillside could have been from a man (or a horse) taking a spill. I think they would have been spread out a bit more if this was the case.

Try using the macro mode (the tulip icon on most cameras) or try using a scanner to get some good shots. I think if you have some good photos this post would be banner worthy!

Not as much as you might think. A loaf of bread would likely have cost 9 cents in the 1840's, while a winter coat might cost around $10. Ground beef was around 14 cents/LB. A pair of boots that might cost $125 today might have cost around $6. In contrast, during the earlier 1800's, the same pair of boots might have cost a bit more, possibly as much as $10.

There are some good online resources for what things cost during different periods in our history. Here is a link to one such resource: http://www.waynesthisandthat.com/cost.htm.

The bigger problem was a lack of small denomination coins. They were just not available and Spanish coins and shillings were still being used widely for commerce.

Thanks Neil, I intend to get a good digital camera asap. I have one now but the macro setting is lousy on coins so I can only scan them for now.
