1636 English six pence Charles I coin

Not sure how you got the date (if its the Tun MM. its 1636-38) & its too small for a sixpence. If you post the diameter & better photos, I will help ID

I found a Charles I hammered sixpence the same variety as yours here in SE Virginia too as part of the 2 scattered caches I found 3 years ago. As Crusader said, to narrow down the date you need to determine what the mint mark is. You can find it above the oval shield between the words "REGNO" & "CHRISTO" on the reverse side. The mint mark on mine looks like a harp, which would be from the Tower Mint (1632-33), but the harp does not exactly match the symbol in my Krause or North books. Maybe Crusader can help me with this as well. Very nice find BTW!

harp is tower mint 1632-3, as you say, mm. do vary.
I think is not the size of a sixpence based on the background, I maybe wrong but we need the diameter to be sure?

My mistake, I now have the diameter by PM & although its a little shy of a Sixpence, the rest is just a small amount of clipping.

So a 1636-38 Charles I Sixpence in the US should be banner material, or its time to pack up & take up tennis. My vote is now in & I'm surprised this has nearly as much UK interest as US, come on 'chaps'..........

Well, I dug a 1583 sixpence this year and 3 hammereds last year (1594 and 1606 sixpences and a Charles I shilling) and never made banner. All dug here in the SE Virginia along with the 2 scattered caches posted above (which do not include these last 4 coins). Here are the pics of those 4:

Bill, when you didn't make the banner for those hammered caches I knew this place was strange. Easily the top cache find on T'net!

Just curious? What is a hammered coin?

Simply put. A blank coin was made of proper weight and material then a die was made for front and back of the coin then heated to soften the metal and die was struck by anvil or hammer by hand. Hence the term hammered coin.
