Hi Everyone,
Been a while since I got any coins,
Got 3 Silvers and 2 Coppers today :sunny:
I finally got my Pine Tree Shilling :D Looks to be a Noe-1 Large Planchet
correct size and weight, 28mm X 4.4 Grams.
A solid coin with some encrustation.
note scratch on obverse and clean X on reverse, good metal right there.
this example is a late stage as shown by severe die cracking around date,
and is close to the specified original weight and diameter, no clipping! :o
The site below is the most comprehensive I've found about Mass Silver,
follow to section contents for more info on the series.
Pine Tree Coinage
Also got my first Barber quarter and an SLQ,
2 LCs, one toast and a '47 with a really nice strike, even full of dirt, she's looking good...
(pardon the soap bubbles)
Thanks for looking and HH All !! Herbie.

Creeper, let me get that copper out for a closer look,
appreciate the heads up!
No outlaw, I stated that the last pic is just an example.
It will never look like that :icon_sunny:
I missed the post where u stated it was an example..sorry for asking..I assumed it was an example but I thought I would asked just to be sure... Yeah let me know about that Copper please
Creeper, I've done the same thing.. long posts & lots of replies..
I took a close look at the cent, No doubling, it's the reflection on the wet surface.
regarding the pine tree, I see an odd fish shaped mark around the date,
what the heck is that :icon_scratch:
Thanks for looking! HH All :icon_sunny:

After reading about circulation of these coins here,
http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinIntros/MASilver.intro.html
(it's halfway down the page)
I'll bet there are still many of these out there to be found,
just a matter of getting your coil over it :D

Re: Been a While, Got some coins! Pine Tree

Thanks All!
Dawg, Johnny, Nana & Slasher,
around 30 years of production in varied issues that they had serious trouble keeping
in local circulation, there's a lot of them in the ground.
Too bad there's so much ground....
Thanks for your replies! HH All! :icon_thumleft:

Hey Dawg & Steve :hello:
I can't believe it either, especially after thinking it was a lead token & walking around with it jangling in my pocket. Yup, lot's of snow comin, storm warnings.
Won't last long,
It's no collectors coin, but great for this MDer.
Read that link I posted above, no doubt there's more out there.
Question is, where is there :laughing7:
Thanks for the reply, & Best Digs, Herbie

that looks great on the banner and cant wait
for you to show the pics after shes cleaned !!!!
Thanks Allen,
Afraid those last pix are as good as she's gettin..
I don't want a stripped coin like that 1877 IH seen from NCS.
Sedwick auctions resto won't touch it.
I got some of the crust off with acid & gentle manual flaking as recommended by University of Texas Shipwreck coin Conservation team (and Diver_Down) :notworthy:
Intrigued by that 'cartouche' , looks like the die was about to give out around the date. anyone seen something like that ??
thanks to everyone for the comments and votes.
there's more out there, I wanna see a Plain NE dug this year :hello2:

Seeing those lines scared me thinking I hope that's not casting lines! But I believe I just found some good news!

Looks like your coin is Noe-1, and that matching die crack leaves very little doubt it's the real deal... something I was also a little concerned about from the first pics, and then the next showing the lines. But now I think this probably proves you got a good one! :headbang:

Iron Patch, Finder of Obscure Information Extraordinaire! :notworthy:
The auction description states: "A later die state, with the reverse die crack spanning the reverse horizontally through the center with several lumps"
the dug example appears to be even more advanced, possibly one of the last struck.
(it looks like the entire date area is about to fall out)
Can't thank you enough for looking into this, I can offer you a great deal on a 1776 'Curency' coin :laughing7:
This certainly puts the 'Authentic' stamp on the item.
I sent Romeo1 some info on the wide circulation of the New England Silver,
and try as they might, they couldn't keep them in local circulation.
It's very possible there's a few in the ground around Dirtyville.
30 years of production yields a lot of coinage.
Again, Many thanks for finding my 'Cartouche'.
Great Digs to You!! Herbie.
