Got out to my friends property and scored these finds in a swampy low area near the homesite. After a few hours of beating the mud and shallows, I got a screamer of a signal that turned out to be the sundial. I cleaned it to give it some eye appeal and will need to find an expert skilled in restoring a piece like this. Thanks for looking!

Great find. What I think is really interesting is the name on it. A quick search shows that there was a Walter Lane in Craven Co., NC in 1733. He was there from at least 1731-9 as he is listed here: https://books.google.com/books?id=v...6AEIPTAD#v=onepage&q=walter lane 1733&f=false . He can be found on pages 356 and 357. Oh, and banner.
Kudos to you on your research David! :occasion14:
That was the first question that came to my mind as well... just who was Walter Lane? :icon_scratch:

Crazy cool find. Love the lettering on it!

Easily one of my favorite finds I've seen on here yet. A few years ago a pewter one turned up, but yours is much more ornate and with a name, date and latitude.... It's incredible. Wondering if the other piece if somewhere on that property. If it's getting a professional preservation, I'm sure that could be reattached if you found it. HUGE congratulations on a well deserved banner... Oh, and nice buckles too!

Congrats on banner

Fantastic find!...i'd be scouring that area with a fine tooth comb....
can't wait to see it after it is restored...

Any more background info on Mr. Walter Lane ?
The accurate engraving work was crafted by someone , imho , Very talented .
Congrats, that is a really stunning quality artifact. Hope to hunt in SC soon.

No new info yet. I will keep looking though. Thanks for nice comment!

Fantastic Banner Find.

It's Hot this time of year in SC but a few nice finds make one forget about the heat.

How did you shine it up ? 'I see nothing wrong with doing so' just wondering.
Again CONGRATZ!!!!

I get stuck doing the honey do list and my buddy is out making banner finds! Congrats that is a great piece of history.

I put Brasso on it and cleaned it to my taste.

Well you got the invite, but you came out of retirement and went back to work! This senior citizen loves retirement!:laughing7:

Man I would love to dig something like that Congrats on the banner And good luck getting it restored .It should be awesome

Congrats on that banner. One of the easiest votes I’ve cast on here. And all I find are regular old clock faces. Lol

Boom baby that's awesome

A stupendous recovery. Congrats on such a unique find. Looking forward to hearing more details on this discovery!

Beautifully personalized! So glad you saved it.
:weee:

I’ve always wanted a sundial....
Lowe’s has one for $45....
But I’d rather have yours!:notworthy:

Wow!!! Amazing find! I have to admit, I find it a little bit more attractive than mine! Congrats on a very well deserved banner, very happy to see another sundial up there!!

If there was a banner for the banner, this would be on it! It is not only worthy of Banner - but a museum IMHO.
