After plucking a couple buttons and many nails, persistence paid off and gave me this beauty of history. However...does anyone know what denomination it could be? I've learned it's usually embossed on the obverse at about 10:00 (4R or 8R). This only has letters. Anyone have any knowledge about this? We also got a homemade reale that has "1R" scratched into it and some great buttons which I'll post when my wife can teach me how to do it. Thanks.

Chris

I was led to believe, by an avid collector (really, he has shoe boxes full of avids stacked away!), that the hole in the vast majority of 1/2 Real and 1 Real coins were punched there so that they could be sewn on to clothing as a decoration.

Congrats on the awesome find! HH, Mike

Nice to see a good picture of one. A friend of mine found some and after alot of cleaning gave me 2. Only difference is the condition, you can barely make out a date on one 1794 and the other is about 3/4 there but these are off some unknown shipwreck that he found while diving.
